- Tar as a (by)product of coal/coke Combustion / Gassification / Pyrolysis
- Essentially a heavy distillate of pyrolysis oil
- Can lead to clogging of equipment
- Can be used for fuel, waterproofing, medicine (supposedly?), and be upgraded to other hydrocarbons
