2025
Concept:
- Off-season FIRST Robotics
- Prize given for 'most referenced collaboration' - all teams collaborate and publish openly
- All team members start Work Log, embed Time Log for logging main achievements and time worked, and use FreeCAD or STEP files to share.
- 20% score bonus earned from using FreeCAD, so designs are modifiable by other teams
- Top 12 teams get $1000 USD prize for meeting Requirements.
- 12 teams correspond to 12 different tool heads: impact driver, clutched drill head, reciprocating saw, circular saw, small blower, multitool head, router head, heavy duty impact driver, small chansaw, LED light, Power Bank (stacked batteries with inverter and charge controller for solar), and leaf blower
- Requirements:
- Must have lifetime performance - it can break more quickly than professional grade industry standards, but must perform minimum tasks required of each tool - AND must be fixable within minutes by part replacement such that it outlasts proprietary professional grade counterparts overall##Open Source Battery Pack - fittable with 18650 cells without soldering (must have spring-loaded contact mechanism)
- Must document production engineering using OSHWA compliant open hardware 3D printers
- Interchangeable toolheads
- 2 phases: body, and heads##Body - includes battery, handle, trigger with speed control, motor, shaft
- Heads - first one is impact drive hear, then clutched drill head, then reciprocating saw, then circular saw, then jigsaw
- Battery pack is stackable, so you can piggyback multiple packs for up to 48V power (safe limit)

Assets
- Access to Wazer at Western U or other locations
- FIRST Robotics support from William the Inspired Neal
- OSE sponsorship for prizes
- Global collaboration led by FIRST Ontario
- Explicit goal of Distributed Market Substitution of commercial global corporates by teenagers
Coordination: To Get Inolved in Global Collaboration in Documentation and Development
- Watch the TED Talk, Future Builders Academy Video, and Viral OSE Instagram Video for context. (need The First Cordless Power Tool Challenge promo video)
- Start a Work Log
- Embed a Time Log
- The Easy Way: Download the latest FreeCAD version online for your computer. But if you do this, you'll be able to readily do step 3 below, but not step 4 (unless you invest in a significantly higher learning curve than using FreeCAD 16).
- Download the CAD from the development template for Seed Eco-Home 6. The direct link to the files is Seed_Eco-Home_6_3D_CAD. (You can also download the Sweet Home 3D file - for the conceptual design model.)
- Practice Hiding and Unhiding Parts in FreeCAD.
- Get familiar with editing, inserting hyperlinks and pictures and videos into Google Slides for large scale collaboration
Advanced
- Download OSE Linux 2 and make a live USB - which contains FreeCAD 16, an older version of FreeCAD. You can use the live USB to work or you can install on your computer as a dual boot system. Note that we are using FreeCAD 16, not the latest FreeCAD version - to simply the workflow. This will allow you to gain quick proficiency in step 3 and 4 below.
- Practice generating Technical Drawings from FreeCAD in FreeCAD 16. This process is much more complicated in the latest version of FreeCAD.
- Pass the FreeCAD Test
- Learn the Development Template
- Begin developing.
