Happy New Year. I have been thinking about a suitable candidate for the Summer X training and I think I know just the person- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hz5v-8hw_oU

Wow, powerful - basically the Africa version of us. Add a few open source fabrication machines in there, and this could be powerful. What he could get out of the Summer is the ability to build all of our stuff from scratch - starting with 3D printing to make CNC torch tables, and eventually down to electric power tools like the grinders he uses. It would be development on both sides - as we don't yet make these but will spawn a large project in Sep 2020 to develop a cordless power tool construction set.

With the skills he gains in our program - I think he will be able to redeem their value. After coming back, I would suggest investing in and replicating some of the key outcomes of the Summer X: ability to 3D print from trash plastic, bootstrapping up to a CNC torch table - and some heavier duty cnc machines. Wow.

This is all feasible, the missing link is collaborative literacy that enables multiple parties to collaborate by seeing a larger picture. Jerry may see it as he is working under demanding conditions, and I suspect he is hungry to learn because he has developed a number of products - makes me think of all the machines in the Global Village Construction Set.

I will chat with him and see if he is open to taking 3 months off. I met him in October, 2019 and his story is compelling. Right now he is working out of a very basic workshop as his previous workshop was destroyed during communal violence, he was knock unconcious and left for dead with a head wound. He is keen to teach others what he knows which makes him the ideal candidate.

Ideally he is fully open to open sharing and understands the culture of collaborative development. If he understands that, then we can collaborate and we both benefit. For example - he uses the simple Chinese Changfa style diesel engine in the video. How about producing them in house, along with the fuel to fuel it (engines are on our plate as well). Then this story will change the world.

Of course there are others in the N-Power programme that may be identified and can take part.
I am scheduled to make a presentation to my club in 2 weeks time. I will propose we skip the pilot and apply for a Rotary global grant ( https://my.rotary.org/en/take-action/apply-grants/global-grants ). I'll keep you posted.

Please feel free to run this by me for feedback.
