Core Values

Communication

Effective communication is integral for maintaining healthy and safe community dynamics at FeF. We encourage honesty, transparency, compassion, and openness in order to foster the a healthy community environment.

Some strategies employed at FeF include:

  • Non-violent communication
  • Conflict Mediation and Resolution
  • Consensus Decision Making
  • Process Dialogue
  • Structured, planned events designed to facilitate discussion and bring the community closer
    • Dinner Seminars - a community member brings a topic of discussion and gives a seminar on the subject, usually at the dinner table during a meal.
    • House Meetings - a weekly meeting run by consensus or informal group dialogue
    • Recreational Events - book clubs, reading aloud, movie nights, game nights
    • Fireside Chats - planned meetings creating a forum for open discussion of personal or emotional topics

Work Ethic

We all work varying schedules, in different fields, and have a high standard for work ethic in ourselves. There is trust that people come here with a shared goal - to be Open Source Ecologists. Community members are requested to be self-motivated, openly collaborative, and honestly communicating their needs such that they can work effectively within the community. There is great freedom to create and realize a vision, so long as there is open communication and collaboration such that shared goals can be achieved.

Lifestyle

FeF houses a number of integrated humans (aka :) people ). Our work is deeply integrated into our living and vise versa. What do we do when we're not building, researching, fabricating, collaborating, farming, or planning?

Relax

  • Sundays are intended to be days of rest.
  • Individuals within the community actively meditate, practice yoga, stretch, and have their own restorative routines. These routines are respected by other members of the community.

Outside Education

  • We teach each other things of interest, not necessarily related to OSE, through deliberate cross-training or simply through day-to-day conversation
  • We teach ourselves things of interest, by using resources such as the internet, local library, books on-site, contacting experts in that field and asking for their opinions.

Play

  • We play card games and board games
  • We schedule pick-up soccer games and other sports
  • We often go to our nearby conservation area's lake to swim, fish, boat, and relax

Music

People play music life, walk around whistling or singing, and sometimes play music electronically. There are many talented people here that enjoy playing live music as well.

  • Yoonseo plays violin
  • Gabi plays ukulele
  • Graham plays harmonica
  • Matt sings, beat boxes
  • Marshall growls
