The Freedom House report is worth reading for the details of the mechanisms of racism, political polarization, and money in politics. The USA is compared here to countries that are marked as less free or not free. Only Italy in the developed world is worse than the USA in 'money in politics' category.

Notes from above article: Democrats, Republicans, and independents alike should be able to unite behind the vision of a free and fair society in which all people are treated equally, everyone has the opportunity to seek a better life, and government serves our collective interests rather than those of certain groups or individuals.
