2. When would you be available for a Dedicated Project Visit and for what duration?

I am quite flexible from July 15th through ~ September 1st, 2014. I'm interested in a 4-6 week duration - possibly longer.

p.s. I was looking at the summer schedule, and I could also maybe come for 2-3 weeks in June if that would be helpful.

3. Please attach a resume or provide a list of work / volunteer experience and education.

One of the biggest projects that I'm proudest of is the Lucy Stone Cooperative, a 14-member housing co-op here in Boston. I was one of the two original co-founders and saw it through from inception, organizing and planning, purchasing the house, and moving in together. I lived there for two years, and it is still thriving more than a year after I've moved out - they are even looking into buying a second house. If you want to get a good sense for the place, you can watch this 5 minute video.

Projects I spearheaded at Lucy Stone Co-op include:

  • property search and acquisition
  • jacking up and reinforcing split ridge rafter to prevent immanent roof collapse
  • tearing out ancient, non-working cook top and surrounding cabinetry
  • installation of working oven & stoves
  • refinishing wood floors
  • renovating full bathroom (including reframing rotted joists and subfloor)
  • installing bike-hanging racks into basement walls (solid fieldstone)

Another relevant volunteer experience was spending an apple harvest at an organic subsistence farm in Argentina: El Peregrino Organico ("The Organic Pilgrim"). I wrote a portion of my recent grad school application essays about the experience. Here is an excerpt: Greg Buckland - Essay Excerpt

  2. why you are interested in applying

Yes. I have sufficient savings to pay for travel, food, and other needs, as long as housing is provided. (I'm also willing to bring a tent or a tarp if housing is in short supply.)

8. Do you have sample work that you could upload and/or share via email? (ie. projects, designs, technical writing, graphic designs, videos, etc).

Just for fun, here's a short digital animation I created back in college using Adobe AfterEffects and Final Cut Pro. I played viola with the Pops Orchestra, who accompanied the animation live while it was projected on screen.

9. Are there skills/expertise you hope to gain while a DPV at FeF?

Yes! I hope to hone some of my existing skills:

  • desiging/protoyping/building
  • Digital fabrication techniques
  • 3D CAD
  • collaborative & team-based design
  • project management skills

Additionally, I'd like to learn:

  • Welding & metalworking
  • CNC milling/routing/lasercutting/plasma cutting
  • Hydraulic systems: design, use, maintenance
  • Compressed Earth Brick building techniques
  • Possible business models for taking Open Source Ecology machines and philosophies to scale

10. Please provide three (3) references (professional or educational).

I will email contact information for the following 3 references directly to the Technical Community Manager at info@opensourceecology.org.

Dr. Florian Engert, Harvard University

I worked in Florian's neuroscience lab for 2 years during my undergraduate studies. That was almost 10 years ago, but we have kept in touch and he's happy to be a reference. Florian can speak to my technical and analytical abilities, as well as my contribution to a collaborative research environment.

Alec Aman, Lucy Stone Cooperative

Alec was a housemate and collaborator when I lived at Lucy Stone Co-op. Alec is an engineer and a maker, and can speak to my enthusiasm for "engineering for social change", creative problem solving ability, and skill at collaborative leadership.

Samantha Wechsler, Institute for Policy Studies (IPS)

Sam was my most recent supervisor during my time at IPS. She can speak to my level of personal organization and effectiveness, my interpersonal skills (including managing conflict and/or delicate situations), and my passion for social and environmental justice.

Please note: I'm happy to provide further references if that would help (e.g. from my time on the Obama campaign, or my time working for the Unitarian Universalist Association).

11. How did you hear about OSE and the DPV opportunity?

I saw Marcin's TED talk some years ago, and then got to see him at the 2012 Bioneers "Connecting for Change" conference. I've been following the blog, Facebook page, and wiki for some time now.

12. Do you have any other concerns or considerations? (May be emailed separately)

None at this time.
