Heroes and Their Woes

Try an old article in Omni magazine by Morris Bermann, a cultural commentator formerly of MIT as a prof of the history of science. the title I think had "heroes" in it.

The other important ref. is William Irwin Thompson in his book "Coming into Being." In this wonderful book he reviews the whole gamut of evolving culture and its forms and norms and discusses "heroes" and their woes. You may find this book prophetic as well in that he is one of the few who can and does articulate a viable "community" future based on the integral thinking of Jean Gebser
