This is an explanation of the mechanism behind how some machine of system works. This should reveal existing or proposed functional mechanisms/workings, or expose a Design Rationale. This can apply to hardware and software. How it works can be applied to:
- mechanisms such as gears, engines, and pulleys
- hydraulic/pneumatic
- electronic
- functions based on thermal properties
- complex systems or ecologies, where the how it works is based largely on the relationships between the parts
- how things are made
- etc
