Introduction
Can hot water heaters also be used for hydronic house heating?
Sure, if they are designed for that. It is not clear how well an on-demand hot water heater would work for powering a hydronic system.
This article says that water heaters may be worthwhile in reasonably warm climates (not cold Canada). They are not designed for full duty cycle, so they will wear out faster. But they are also low maintenance and low cost to replace, as little as $200. So it appears that if your hot water supply could heat your house, then it probably could. Further, in-ground hydronics is well-suited for lower temperatures of hot water heaters - 140 as opposed to 180. [1]
