- WHY are you motivated to support/develop this work?
I want this project to succeed by helping people. I know that any work I do will go directly towards a project which will enhance the lives of those in need.
- Do you endorse open source culture?
Absolutely! I have been actively using open source software for 6 years now. I use Ubuntu as my main operating system which is where I get most of my experience with open source software.
- Why are you interested in collaborating with us?
My goal is to find a marketing internship experience which can integrate my diverse practical and academic background. When I came across the Open Source Ecology project on the Make blog, it jumped out at me as an opportunity to use all of my skills for a project that was genuinely about helping people.
- Are you interested in teaching about the GVCS?
I enjoy public speaking. I have made interactive speeches to audiences of 250 before. In addition, I also can speak off the cuff.
- Do you want to use the GVCS technologies yourself? Do you want to build them yourself?
I would be interested in helping to build the machines.
- Are you interested in applying the GVCS to third world development? To redevelopment of crisis areas? To development of derelict areas in the developed world?
A speaker once told me "Do well by doing good." The GVCS is perfect for developing third world countries. I love the idea of using these machines to help people improve their quality of life; It is a very stimulating idea. In addition, the thought of using the machines to rebuild areas that have suffered trauma also appeals to me.
- Are you interested in the potential of the GVCS for developing local food systems?
The GVCS's reduced price as well as its open documentation could be well applied to smaller scale farmers in general. I think it has a lot of potential to increase the output of smaller scale operations.
- Are you interested in the distributive economic aspects of our work, and if so, how do you see this playing out?
The decentralization of farming will lead to a more robust market place by helping to ensure a higher degree of agriculture product availability. At the same time, the decentralization of farming will also lead to a stronger local economy and thus communities.
- Are you interested in building renewable energy production facilities based on open hardware (solar concentrator electric, wind, biomass power)
Renewable energy production is critical to the stable, safe, and sustainable operation of a community. The GVCS should also have some provision for being able to build renewable energy stations to power the community.
- Are you interested in building resilient communities based on access to the GVCS?
"Resilient" is a broad term, however, I think the term covers the breath of what a "resilient" community could be. The system will certainly increase the economic resilience of the community by providing a means to produce on a smaller scale locally. It will also create communities which are more resilient to natural disaster and changes in climate. The GVCS will also help communities function more efficiently by providing goods and services locally.
- Are you interested in creating a bug-out hut using GVCS technologies?
We must have a plan for the zombie outbreak...But to be serious, I am a survivalist. I have and keep ready survival equipment in the event of a crisis. I have my equipment stored in "grab bags." The idea is that in case of a crisis, grab that bag! Moving from the equipping stage to a bug out hut, that was made by the GVCS, seems is a logical step.
- How do you think that the GVCS can help alleviate the instabilities of global monetary systems?
The GVCS will help stabilize local economies. The stabilized local economies will sum to larger more stable economies.
- How do you think that the GVCS can address issues related to resource conflicts?
The GVCS will help communities produce their own products.
- How do you think that the GVCS can address issues of overpopulation?
The GVCS can help physically grow communities to create more area for people to reside.
- How do you think that the GVCS can address issues of resource depletion and environmental degradation?
The GVCS can help save the environment by providing a way to harness nature in a healthy way at a grass roots level. The GVCS can grow with communities as needed to meet the demands of society in the immediate future and into the long term.

I have taken an abundant amount of marketing related coursework. One example is the business simulation advertising course I took. The advertising class collaborated with five other business courses as a simulated company which created a 5 year business plan for a local venture. I earned an A in the business simulation advertising course. I also have some engineering experience; I spent two years at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology as an undergraduate. I have been the President, Vice President, or Officer of many technical and non-technical clubs such as the Robotics Team and Entrepreneurship club.

I have created a marketing plan for a startup company called JAM Customs. It is a good example of a type of document that I could write for the Open Source Ecology Project. I also have access to very good graphic designers and artists who can assist in creating visual marketing materials such as logos and advertisements. I have done technical writing for a magazine called the Brickjournal. They are a magazine that is specially centered around the LEGO community. I have written 4 articles which have been published in the magazine. I have taken 2 Computer Aided Design classes. I can use Solid Edge at an intermediate level to build parts, and make/dimension part drawings.
I am a HAM radio operator. I have a Technician class license, and my call-sign is K9JBT. I usually operate in the 440 band.

I was the public relations officer for the Linux Users' Group at Rose-Hulman. I spread the word about the club though the school by word of mouth and routinely answered questions about the club. I have also volunteered extensively for FIRST: . I used to compete in FIRST competitions, now I volunteer at their events. I enjoy speaking in public. It invigorates me. I love to network and gain new connections!

I use Ubuntu as my main operating system on all of my computers; I use lots of FOSS.

I have used MFG [www.mfg.com] as a bidding system for getting mechanical parts created before.

Are you familiar with CAD software or modeling software such as Blender? Have you designed and built circuits? Are you familiar with power electronics design? What relevant field of design have we missed that we should be asking about?
I have designed and built some basic circuits. I am knowledgeable in electronics up to logic gates. I have taken 2 CAD classes before that used Solid Edge's 3D functions and AutoCAD's 2d drafting package.
- Are you a prototyper, rapid prototyper, custom fabricator, general contractor, construction worker, mason, carpenter, heavy equipment operator, welder, machinist, mechanic, woodworker, or other producer? Are you a certified chainsaw operator and have you taken a chainsaw safety course? Are you familiar with CAM? Do you know how to machine gears? Have you built any tools that you use on a regular basis? Have you built your own house? What relevant build skill have we missed that we should be asking about?
I have some machining experience. I used to build robots for the IGVC at Rose-Hulman. I was the President and Mechanical Team leader of the Robotics Team. I also took two machining classes at Harper College in Palatine, IL. Most of my machining experience has been on old Bridgeports. I have also used many sizes of lathes from a table top size to medium duty lathes. My personal favorite lathe was an old Cincinnati lathe that was built in 1955. It was also the largest lathe I have used. I have never used CNC equipment before, however I am proficient with their general operating principles.
One of my favorite machining projects I did for class was an adapter plate that adapted a rotary table to a 3 jaw chuck. Before the adapter plate, students would need to go through a laborious centering routine to locate their piece on the rotary table directly. The adapter plate and 3 jaw chuck allowed students to quickly hold a workpiece that was already centered on the rotary table. This saved a lot of time. I built the part for the class and the benefit for the other students. The adapter plate has currently been in service for a semester. Pictures of the part can be provided upon request. I have also built scribes, hole punches, and mini vices among other small projects.
Electronics and Magnetics
- Do you have experience with power electronics or circuit design? Are you familiar with converters, inverters, high frequency power supplies? Are you familiar with solenoid valve design? Can you do magnetic field calculations? Have you designed electrical motors or generators? What relevant field of E&M have we missed that we should be asking about?
I have taken some E&M. I am aware of the principals and foundations of E&M.
- Are you familiar with precision drive systems? Are you familiar with stepper motors or servos? Can you design an open source stepper motor controller? Have you built or designed CNC equipment? Do you have experience with industrial robotics? What relevant subset of automation have we missed that we should be asking about?
I have some robotics experience. I am aware of the principles of operation of motors and servos.
- Are you a subject matter expert in agricultural engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, industrial process design, robotics and automation, chemical engineering, materials science, polymer engineering, structural engineering, automotive engineering?
I went to engineering school for two years. I used to study mechanical and optical engineering. I have some robotics experience building robots for the IGVC: www.igvc.org. I know some things about cars: engines, transmissions, transfer cases, etc.

I am interested in working for pay. I can provide marketing services and possibley some technical services. I would like to work at $15/hour

I am a True Fan because I want to see this project succeed because it will genuinely help significant portions of the people living on the Earth.
- Would you like to see yourself working with us on a full-time basis?
I would like to work full time over the summer. I will want to switch to part time once school starts again in the Fall.
- Are you interested in being part of the world's first, open source, resilient community? The GVCS is the preparatory step for the OSE Village Experiment – a 2 year, immersion experiment (2013-2014) for testing whether a real, thriving, modern-day prototype community of 200 people can be built on 200 acres using local resources and open access to information? We are looking for approximately 200 people to fill a diverse array of roles, according to the Social Contract that is being developed. This may be the boldest social experiment on earth - a pioneering community whose goal is to extend the index of possibilities regarding harmonious existence of humans, ecology, and technology – as a beacon of light to benefit of all people on Earth.
