OSE Fellows Revenue Considerations

Revenue accounting is divided by different sources to obtain a net revenue for each Fellow:

  • Running workshops - typically OSE charges $300 above the bill of materials for a 1 day build, or $300-$1000 above the BOM for 2 day Training the Trainers (Extreme Learning) workshops. The revenue above the bill of materials and other event costs goes to the Fellow's net revenue accounting.
  • Producing kits or parts - depends on product.
  • Other - honoraria for presentations, consulting, or other.

All costs are subtracted from the revenue to obtain the net revenue. The main cost there is the Bill of Materials cost plus any required tools. Shipping costs may also be involved if there are any shipments going out to clients.

Bill of Materials costs include parts and their shipping, and the feedstocks/energy for 3D printing. If the Fellow is making their own filament from recycled plastic, then the cost of 3D printing filaments drops down to only the cost of the recycled plastic plus the electricity to run the filament maker and grinder. Generally speaking - the cost of running the desktop microfactory is primarily the cost of the electricity that it uses. Maintenance costs have to be counted as a cost and should be subtracted from the revenue to obtain net revenue.

In their monthly accounting, Fellows can add their electricity, materials, and maintenance costs and OSE will subtract these from the net revenue to obtain the net revenue.

There may be costs associated with the venue for running workshops, or other incidentals, which are likewise subtracted from the net. The Fellow covers their travel costs, such as gas and food. Typically, workshops are in the local area, so airfare or hotels are not a cost. If flights and a hotel are inclcuded, they must be subtracted from the revenue to get the net revenue. F

A net revenue of $3000 is sufficient to cover the stipend for the OSE Fellow. A net of $6000 is sufficient to cover OSE operating costs - thus making OSE financially sustainable for the long run. Any revenue above $6000 is a bonus, and is shared 50/50 between the Fellow and OSE.
