The power of Blender or FreeCAD for design lies in part libraries that can be dropped readily into a design using basic design rules that can be documented easily in a design guide. The designs can be engineered, and saved as publically available assets. Then novices can use the engineered part libraries and create engineered designs, whether in housing or other projects:

Ability for average individuals to make designs runs counter the common religion of professionalism. However, professionals are requuired only in so far as the engineering has to be done. From this point, as long as the engineered modules have a user-friendly interface - novices can use these assets in real, technical design. This unleashes the power of creativity in advanced civilization, and is possible only in an open design framework. Open design is required, as without open design, the engineered building blocks would not be available to everyone.
