Spilling Engine
It appears that a German company Spilling http://www.spilling.de/english/produkte.php has come up with a steam engine design capable of handling up to 1200 deg F. steam with no lubrication required. They are not forthcoming about this design and further research is needed to determine what there trick is.

My Swiss client is all worked up about this Spilling steam engine, and the fact that it does not use cylinder oil.
He said this morning that it works and is in production; but with highly superheated steam they have long life problems.
Anyone know what the ring material is that they are using on the piston and valve?

Hello Jim,
It looks from the cross section shown on the site that it is a piston valve engine. The cylinder liners and rings are shown as a different material, plastic?
Anyway one could probably call them up and ask them.

Hi Bill,
It is a piston valve, easily seen in the drawing, nice big ports too.
They will not tell. My client tried. They want you to take out a licence or buy an engine.
I asked him about innocently buying a set of spare rings.
Plastic?? At 750°f steam? Not likely. Perhaps a ceramic-graphite sintered ring, or some other graphite based composit. Anyhow, I am going to find out, just to satisfy my curiosity. JC

Hi Jim that is a realy nice engine.
The piston rings donnot have to operate at the steam inlet temperature as it will average with the exaust temp. They might also have a small water cooling line injecting to the side wall of the piston. We can operate higher than 1200f and operate well. There is more than one type of material in the rings we are using and some are new and experimental high temp. stuff we are having formulated. Super high efficency is not necessary when burning garbage. I think we will see more of this, at least I hope so.
