Basics
- This page aims to cover the current State of the Art, explore if any is commercially available/restricted by patents etc, and lay out Potential Avenues of Exploration for the production of Spider Silk via Precision Fermentation (Although other monomer sourcing strategies will be mentioned as well)
- Spider Silk is an interesting material as it can have the High Performance Characteristics of Aramid Fiber (ie Kevlar ) / UHMWPE ( Dyneema ) Fiber, while still remaining biodegradable.
- Using ONLY Cotton / Rayon (as well as Waxed Canvas / Waxed Cotton / Oilskin / Oilcloth ) and Wool / Keratin Based Semi-Synthetic Fibers is quite limiting, however is best practices in terms of avoiding Plastic Pollution / Micro/Nano-Plastics / PFAS
- Novel Spider Silk Based Fiber/Textiles will remedy this need
