Lessons on Effective Time Management

This page is intended to capture learnings on effective time management, geared at executive and management individuals who are immersed in a long-term development project.

  1. If you receive a long email of a written page or more of followup on an active topic of exploration - scan the email first to determine whether it's one of 2 cases: (1) whether the email is a substantial and earnest start of actionable development; or (2) whether it is a roundabout statement that the person is not interested (such as a rant that requires emotional consolation, or just self-exploration). In the latter case, scan the message and provide a brief consolation. In the former, engage with due diligence. Lesson: do not get trapped into providing a lengthy response to non-actionable development items. Insight: I received a message where after about 15 minutes of going through an earnest response, it became clear that the person said "I'm not interested in getting involved", and I was already responding how the person could get involved. Complete misuse of my time.
