Shaun MacDougall is a contributor to Open Source Ecology, drawn to the project's vision of open-source hardware for building resilient, self-sufficient communities. Born in Salinas, California, he grew up in Sydney, Australia, where his father worked as a carpenter and builder. As a child, Shaun admired and aspired to his father's craft—transforming raw materials like wood and stone into livable homes—though it felt ordinary then. Today, he reflects with awe on those skills and seeks to apply similar hands-on creation on a larger scale.Shaun served in the U.S. Air Force as a diesel mechanic, gaining practical experience with heavy machinery and maintenance. Using the GI Bill, he earned a bachelor's degree in web development and video production. With over 20 years of professional experience in digital development, he now turns toward tangible, real-world building—creating sustainable systems and technologies that empower people and promote ecological regeneration. His work with Open Source Ecology connects his mechanical background, technical expertise, and lifelong drive to build transformative, accessible solutions.
