  1. Cats are opportunistic hunters, and will catch prey if not hungry. Playing with prey plays out this inner conflict. A more hungry cat will kill faster. This has been shown in studies.
  2. There is a danger of injury to the cat. Thus, the cat weakens the prey by paralyzing the prey with fear. This has been shown in experiments. [1]
