Basics

  • A type of a seaweed (often red algae)
  • Produces agarose and agropectin (agar) in its cell walls
  • Is thus the crop from which Agar comes from

Types

Natural

Gracilaria

Gelidium

Genetically Engineered

  • Basic Premise:
    • Insert the agar genes into other algae species (or even other plants)
    • This can be done for easier cultivation (due to a species that is already farmed (such as for edible seaweed)), faster growth, etc
