Background
- Tower and turbine - cost design thesis - [1]. Minimum tubular towers are 1.5m, max 5 m wide.
- Civil engineering costs - $134k for 750 kw tower
250 kW Turbine
- Take a tower 1/4" thick, 5' wide, and 100' tall.
- Weight is 8500kg/m3 for steel.
- 1/4"*2*pi*60"*1200"=100k cubic inches, about 2 cubic meters.
- About 16,000 lb weight. This tower would thus cost about $25k in welding.
- Would take 1000 hours with 1 welder. 200 hours with 5 welders (100kW). 200 hours/24 = 8 days per tower with 5 welders.
- 40 days with 1 welder. 5 welders make it practical for Extreme Manufacturing.
- Now, this assumes that a 5' diameter tower, 1/4" thick will suffice for a 250 kW turbine head.
