Problem framing: A large number of life science techniques rely the genetic information stored in plasmids. These plasmids are easily replicated and exchanged, but due to lack of channels of communication and the increasingly complex contractual obligations covering genetic information it is difficult for research institutions to distribute plasmids widely. Researchers that create useful recombinant DNA have the ability to get their designs into the wild, but lack incentives to do so. The new tool of blockchain smart-contracts can solve many of these distribution obstacles to create a market for recombinant DNA.
