The idea is to avoid economic dependence on external suppliers for chemistry products and produce all needed chemicals within the village economy at the local chemistry lab. This avoids unnecessary, unhealthy, wasteful, and therefore environmentally destructive transportation. On the other hand, smaller (batch) scale may have its own waste problems.
