We are pleased to announce our first ever 6 month Apprenticeship - the OSE Apprenticeship - starting July 1, 2021. You will study with me directly - and  you will master a number of collaborative design and build skills - and get a chance to collaborate with Open Source Ecology full time when you finish the program.

Over the last decade, we designed and built dozens of open source industrial machines and published the plans on the internet for free. We taught hundreds of student collaborators to build themselves - and we also innovated on distributed enterprise models. We published several product releases,  such as the Compressed Earth Block press,  3D Printer, and most recently, the Seed Eco-Home. Our apprenticeship allows you to dive right in, learn all that we have learned - and move this work forward.
 
The 6 month program builds around the Seed Eco-Home as a revenue stream. We've learned how to build effectively with swarm builds - which allow us to build a house with 24 people - in a single week.
 
Our goal is to train entrepreneurial partners to collaborate with OSE. First, we want to solve housing. How? With an affordable, ecological, incremental, digital Housing 2.0, low-cost house that can be built either DIY or by professionals - in the most efficient, ecological, highest quality, and cost-effective way possible. With open source. The current cost is $50k in materials for a 1000 sf home. We're starting with light frame construction this year, and moving to Compressed Earth Block in 2022. The Seed Eco-Home includes developing supporting machines, such as our tractor and brick press, and  larger 3D printers for construction materials printed from waste plastic, and an industrial-grade sawmill - all open source. The work also includes innovating on social enterprise models, and organizing large scale collaborative development events.
 
In the 6 months, you will gain mastery in basics of open source, collaborative design and build - and have a chance to learn management and enterprise skills. We are building upon our modular, construction set approach - with open source part libraries and design guides. You see, prototyping should not take months or years: it takes only as much time as determined by the prior art available. That is the beauty of open source: not reinventing the wheel, as the information is open. So we can start - exactly at the frontier of human knowledge. Unfortunately this is rare in today's world of proprietary design - but our goal is to change this - with you taking an active role in this. As such, we work on economically significant products - houses, tractors, 3D printers, production machines. In order to engage in this fully - You will need to learn a basic skill in CAD design, Wikis, crowd editable docs, rapid prototyping with 3D printing and CNC torch table, calculations, microcontrollers, and basic skills of collaborative literacy that allow you to find and organize all work on our wiki - in a matter of seconds - while involving global teams in a large-scale collaborative process - AND using entirely open source and accessible toolchains - so anyone can participate.
 
The biggest learning is a mindshift - to a completely collaborative approach. Open collaborative - means open source licenses for products, working openly by logging work, using wikis and cloud-editable docs, involving outside audiences throughout, using crowdfunding, and organizing reward-based incentive challenges and hackathons. It takes specific skills - and moreso - a different mindset - to actually do this right - in a way that allows for open source economics to emerge - producing revenue models that are not based on artificial scarcity and exclusion. That is the yet-undelivered promise of open hardware. It takes a psychological shift - to recognize that we are not alone - that we are all in this world together. Our mission is collaborative design for a transparent and inclusive economy of abundance.
 
In our program, the day to day is Design Training- where you learn about all types of functional building blocks - like legos - that constitute all known technology. Then we follow with a couple of hours practice in creating new designs in CAD based on part libraries and the design training. And then we have - 4 hours of builds each day - whether house modules, machines, or others. On Friday - we work on site infrastructure and upgrades - such as a new solar-powered workshop, building more classrooms, aquaponic greenhouse, more microhouses, biodigester for onsite wastewater recycling, access roads - building tools and more machines - doing tree plantings - all using our open source equipment that we will either build or have built already. Effectively, you are learning how to build a global village.
 
Saturdays are Global Collaboration Days - dedicated to video production, documentation, creating rapid-learning materials, developing collaborative protocols, designing incentive challenges, organizing hackathons, and other tasks  - all combining to involve the whole world in this world-changing work. The key to involving others is understanding work breakdown structures - across multiple disciplines - so we can divide complicated tasks into bitesize chunks - using the principle of modular breakdown. The internet makes this easy.
 
In the evenings, we do an enterprise development seminar at least twice a week - where we collaborate on open source business development - including marketing, and philosophy - using socratic dialogue - and following the paradigm of distributive enterprise. Meaning - we develop enterprise models - and publish them on the internet for free - for anyone to  to get involved. We will create things like marketing copy, product websites, brochures, economic analyses, enterprise organizational structures, recruiting strategies, and other assets that help us and the world get set in production. But before that - we always ask the why - why we are doing it - does it really help - does it have purpose - does it give life. The larger idea here is that - economics, which by the way originally means House Keeping - or making a living - should only be a small part of one's activity- and the majority should focus on our true passions and interests, towards cultural and scientific progress - and the things that make us human. Yet we live in a world quite the opposite - where very few get to follow their dreams and become immortal - and that is a fundamental bug in our operating system - that needs fixing. So we think and act on making life and enterprise easier so we can thrive with amazing modern technology - and pursue our true pursuits - of self-determination.
 
In the apprenticeship - There is also a bonus. Because the Summer of Extreme Design-Build - or Summer X - is happening September 1 - the OSE Apprentices also get to participate - in parts related to the Seed Eco-Home. See the Summer X program announcement.
 
We will be learning quite a bit in a rather short time. How? The secret sauce - naturally - is open source - working openly - spending zero time on competitive waste - teaching and learning from each other - all of us - with a process based on collaborative, modular, open source design, part libraries as building blocks, global feedback, and swarm builds - all together - unbridled collaboration. One of our breakthroughs has been - reducing prototyping cycles from months to days - using modular building blocks like legos. We're learning constantly how to work more effectively with remote collaborators, working with the crowd. We don't have to do it alone - and while we are at it - we end up faster-better-stronger - where the rate of progress - depends simply upon available prior art. This a concept whose potential-  I believe - very few people truly understand. We are more ambitious and optimistic about this potential than ever. It is obvious to us - that open hardware will simply gobble up in terms of impact - that which has already happened with open source software. Our goal for OSE, is the open source economy created by 2035 - reaching what we call the collaborative singularity - the point in human history - where we actually learn to cooperate. This to us, is an inevitable part of human evolution. Otherwise, we just destroy ourselves. This is what society needs to learn - in order to survive - I don't think it's optional.
 
The 6 month apprenticeship may not be easy for some - as it requires the psychological growth to embody the full value of open - ceasing to work solo - and to participate in  - the collaborative creation of genius. Edison said that “Genius is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration,” and that's how it works at OSE - it's hard work. Except - if you learn to leverage the crowds - and they contribute openly - then we have the potential of genius squared. And we have fun at it. But it will be 99% perspiration - up to the point that we up our skill set - until we know - how to work openly with others. Then we can do anything.  The concepts and ideas are easy! It's easy to talk about collaboration - everyone says they do it - but in reality? Not common - I look forward to the day that patents become obsolete. We're not there yet. Sharing openly - can be quite threatening - imagine a company like Intel opening up its chips? Not happening - yet. The possibility remains to create collaborative wonders - and certainly raise humanity - to a new plane.
 
For the apprenticeship - we are looking for super-cooperators - interested in a diverse, generalist skillset. We all teach each other - and I look forward to learning a lot from you. We pull together - developing the next economy - and co-creating because we have great proofs of concept - and now it will be the 99% perspiration. We have a long way to go - that's why we want to coordinate and pull together. But think about it - development has to be documented only once - if we're not reinventing the wheel. So the critical mindshift is understanding and practicing this simple point. If you think that you can do better on your own, and not push new developments back into the commons - then our culture may not be a fit. We are looking for people who want to change the world - by learning the obvious - though hard in practice - skills to do so. The program is designed to train autonomous entrepreneurs to collaborate on pressing world issues - not what simply pays. Nobody will fund the revolution  - that's against the rules of the current system - so we bootstrap our way.
 
Out of the program, you'll learn to build the full Seed Eco home. You will have  a chance to focus on building machines - or the management and executive tracks. Our goal is to create possibilities - and to provide opportunities for anyone interested - at the level they choose. The baseline is a design-builder coming out of the 6 month immersion - a person who builds - but understands the design sufficiently to start making meaningful improvements. With the hundreds of hours of CAD practice throughout the program, we expect graduates to be fully capable of making design changes and producing build documents such as instructionals or house details for building officials. Our advancement opportunity starts with design-build, moves to managing crews - and moves to the executive level - or organizing build and crowd development events.  And the last rung is open source movement entrepreneurship - more for the multi-year medium term - people who start other allied enterprises based on OSE methods. The concept is starting OSE-inspired campuses worldwide - serving as world heritage sites - of cultural and economic transformation. A movement entrepreneur is someone who believes that the world does indeed need changing - and has the courage to collaborate openly and and engage fully to change it. By changing the rules of the game. I wish I learned that in college.
 
There's a twist here - OSE's goal is to train entrepreneurs - not to create employees. Those are 2 different breeds. The goal is that the people we train work _with_ OSE as a coordinated global movement - not work _for_ OSE. We are interested in starting OSE campuses worldwide - highly coordinated _and_ autonomous - partnering with OSE International on a much larger goal than any branch can do alone. Perhaps a good way to describe this is an open source franchise - with the twist from a regular franchise - that all our knowhow is open, collaboratively developed.
Anyone can download all our information for free - but we provide immersion training to those who want to learn significantly faster than they would on their own.

It takes specific skills - and moreso - a different mindset - to actually do this right - in a way that allows for open source economics to emerge - producing revenue models that are not based on artificial scarcity and exclusion. It takes a psychological shift - to recognize that we are not alone - that we are all in this world together. Our mission is collaborative design for a transparent and inclusive economy of abundance.
 
In our program, the day to day is a Design Training- where you learn about all types of functional building blocks that constitute all of human made technology - followed by a couple of hours practice in creating new designs in CAD based on part libraries, design guides, and teamwork. And then 4 hours of builds each day - whether house modules, machines, or other things. On Friday - we work site infrastructure and upgrades - such as a new solar-powered workshop, aquaponic greenhouse, more microhouses, biodigester for onsite wastewater recycling, access roads - build tools and more machines - do tree plantings - all using our open source equipment that we will build or have built already. Effectively, you will learn how to build a village. Wow - I wish I could have learned that in 6 months.
 
Saturdays are Global Collaboration Days - dedicated to video production, documentation, creating rapid-learning materials, collaborative protocols development, incentive challenge design, hackathon organization, and other tasks  - focusing on involving others all over the world - in this world-changing work. The key to involving others is understanding work breakdown structure across multiple disciplines - so we can divide complicated tasks into bitesize chunks - using the principle of modularity. We will learn how to seed incentive challenges on HeroX - an incentive challenge platform and spinoff from the X Prize, and how to run Extreme Enterprise Hackathons - large collaborative events aimed at releasing products from near-release candidates.
 
In the evenings, we do an enterprise development seminar at least twice a week - where we collaborate on open source business development, marketing, and philosophy - using socratic dialogue - and following the paradigm of distributive enterprise - meaning - developing enterprise models - and publishing them on the internet for free. We will create things like marketing copy, product websites, brochures, economic analyses, cost structures, benchmarking and analysis of industry standards, and other assets that help us and the world get set and go into production - but before that - always asking the why - why we are doing it - does it really help the world - is it really needed - does it have purpose - does it give life. The larger idea here is - making a living should be only a small and trivial part of one's activity- and the rest should focus on our true passions and interests, cultural and scientific progress. Others talk about universal basic income. We call it open source industrial productivity  - on a small scale. Yet we live in a world quite the opposite - where very few get to follow their dreams - and that is a fundamental bug in our operating system - that needs fixing. So we think and act on making life and enterprise easier so we can all thrive with modern technology - and pursue our true pursuits - of self-determination. Not letting technology run our lives - but instead - humans in control of appropriate technology.
 
We will be learning quite a bit in a very short time. How? The secret sauce is working openly - spending no time on competitive waste - standing on the shoulders of giants - raising the shoulders of giants - teaching and learning from each other - all of us - with a process based on collaborative, modular, open source design, global feedback, and swarm builds - unbridled collaboration. One of our breakthroughs has been module-based design - which reduces prototyping cycles from months to days. We're learning constantly how to work more effectively with remote coparticipants, and to leverage incentive challenges, crowd funding, and hackathons for rapid design/builds. We don't have to do it alone - and we end up faster-better-stronger - where the rate of progress - depends simply on available prior art. So here is my challenge to you - expose your trade secrets, prior art - and other booty -so that everyone can benefit. This a concept whose potential-  I believe - very few people truly understand - as everyone would collaborate openly if they did. We are more ambitious and optimistic than ever. We believe that open hardware will simply gobble up in terms of scale - what has already happened with software. Our goal for OSE, is the open source economy created by 2035 - reaching what we call the collaborative singularity - the point in human history - where we actually learn to cooperate. This to us, is an inevitable part of human evolution. Otherwise, we destroy ourselves.
 
 
The 6 month apprenticeship may not be easy for some - it requires the psychological growth to embody the full value of open - and to participate in  - the collaborative creation of genius. Edison said, “Genius is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration,” and tats how it works at OSE. Except - if you leverage the crowds - and they contribute openly - then we have genius squared. And have fun at it. But until we cultivate the open, collaborative, growth mindset - it will be 99% perspiration. But once we are on the other side - then we can do anything - anything is possible.  The concepts of collaboration seems easy. It's easy to talk about collaboration - but to do it in real life? Not common - I look forward to the day that patents become obsolete. We're not there yet. Shareing openly - can be quite threatening - imagine Intel opening up its chips? The possibility remains to create collaborative wonders - and certainly raise the level of existence of humanity - to a new plane.

The Open Source Ecology Eco-Tractor workshop is an immersion experience where we will build a working tractor - and more - over a weekend:
<li><strong>A Microtractor:</strong> A 32 hp, tracked machine that is similar in functionality to a Toro Dingo brand utility machine but is more powerful. Because our build system is modular, we will add a second power Cube to this tractor for a total of 32 hp for more demanding tasks. </li>

        <li><strong>Tractor:</strong> A 64 hp tractor that consists of 2 of the Microtractor units combined together. As the first team works on the Microtractor, a second team will work on a wider version of the tractor for the second 32 hp half. The 64 hp combination tracor will feature articulated steering, where the tractor bends in the middle to turn. The 64 hp tractor will be designed with a quick attach such that either the larger tractor - or 2 of the smaller tractors - can be used as needed.</li> 
 
<li><strong>Solar Module:</strong> The beauty of hydraulic power which we use to drive the tractor is that a small power source can still move a heavy machine - only slower. Thus, a 2000 lb tractor can still move - and with as much force - on a single solar panel. As such, we will use a solar panel to run a small electric Power Cube - which then can run the tractor.  This will be our proof of concept that a tractor can do useful operations on solar power - shining new light on the capacity of solar power to fuel agriculture. This leads to automation.</li>
 
<li><strong>Automation Module:</strong> Another advantage of hydraulics is that they can be controlled easily via solenoid valves and controllers - in addition to manual control. As such, we will program a controller to drive the tractor autonomously. The first proof of concept will be the tractor driving autonomously in a simple pattern - using an Arduino controller. If time allows, we will implement an automated guidance system with feedback from the environment for avoiding obstacles. </li>
 
If more than 18 people sign up for the workshop, then we will also build a:
 
<li><strong>Charcoal Power Module:</strong> Did you know that a gasoline engine can run on charcoal? We will be improving upon the last year's prototype to build a second iteration of a gasifier. The gasifier produces gas from charcoal to fuel the Microtractor. We will mount the gasifier on the tractor, and fuel the tractor with charcoal gas via the air intake. This will demonstrate that our tractor can run on biomass-derived charcoal, which is a renewable form of energy - relevant in areas where biomass is abundant.</li>
 
Here is some prior work from 2 years ago. The largest machine that we built was 71 hp so far. We did not yet build the 164 hp machine discussed in the video:

As such, we are using Nema 17 stepper motors and 6mm GT2 belt - the same as on our 3D printer. This pushes the limits of modularity and scalabilility - reducing overall GVCS parts count significantly.

<strong>A Scalable, Modular Construction Set for Tractors</strong>
 
 
<strong>Construction Set Design</strong>
 
To create a Construction Set - we designed a small set of modules that can be reconfigured. The core parts include power cubes, the Universal Rotor, tracks, frames, and hydraulics modules. We are designing with the absolute simplicity in mind, such that machines can be maintained for a lifetime of use. Our parts count of about 100 unique parts for the entire tractor is lower than anything available on the market.

<strong>Lowest Unique Part Count in the World</strong>
 
The beauty lies in an absolute minimum number of parts that can be used to build an infinite variety of heavy machines - depending on size, axis configuration, and implements heads. The unique part count is in general around only 100 parts, which is about 5 times less than anything available commercially.
 
By making our machines simple and universal, we are aiming for the most widely replicated tractor construction set in the world. There are no constructio sets for tractors out there yet. To that end, we are inviting developers and entrepreneurs to join the <a href="http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/OSE_Developers">OSE Development Team</a>.
 
This workshop intends build  upon OSE's <a href="http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/Extreme_Manufacturing">Extreme Manufacturing</a> approach of rapid building with multiple teams working in parallel on modular components. By simplifying the design and streamlining the build with digitally-fabricated, open source parts - we intend to develop a model where several of our tractors can be produced in a single day by a team of people. Our goal is to develop open source microfactories for distributed production - using the Experience Economy and Social Production.
 
We are also developing an open source enterprise model for how to run extreme build workshops anywhere in the world. We are publishing our enterprise model openly, with all supporting information that helps people in a successful startup - without reinventing the wheel. We will also be offering 6 week immersion training where strong candidates can learn to replicate our workshops to start a small business.
 
<strong>Workshop Expectations</strong>
This workshop is experimental, and not a turnkey product. We have significant experience with the topics covered, but surprises always come up in an experimental build. We have thorough CAD documentation of the machine. We have built 10 prototype tractors already. But surprises do come up in ambitious builds like ours. No matter what - we will build it - and we will drive it. Whether we complete the solar drive option, the charcoal fuel option (gasifier), and the computer vision - is up to us.

While we have done extensive design work, and prototyped the different parts - this workshop is a first complete build. Expect to problem solve - and learn a lot in the process. This is an immersion learning experience in design and build. The worst case achievement scenario would be that we get the automated machine going in the xy plane - so we an cut steel with it, but we may not have the torch height controller installed, nor automatic gas turn-on so that the oxygen will have to be turned on manually for cutting metal. In the ideal scenario, we will implement fully automatic control, including height control, automatic gas turn-on, and automatic flame ignition. We will practice cutting on sample 1/4" and 1/2" thick steel.
 
The first day covers use of FreeCAD, and explanation of the design rationale for the CNC torch including all its components, and why we made the choices that we did. We will teach participants the basics of FreeCAD - literacy in manipulating 3D objects as well as modifying their geometry. We will provide an introduction to KiCad for electronics design - of the CNC torch height controller. We will have 2-4 3D printers printing during the workshop to produce additional parts (cable chain + other parts). How far will we get to completion? It's up to us. The risk factors are system integration from proven parts.
 
If you want an immersion lesson in FreeCAD, please make sure to download the <a href="http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/OSE_Linux">OSE Linux</a>, which can be run on your computer from a USB stick without interfering with your operating system. This Linux has the FreeCAD and other software that is necessary to work with the CNC torch table. If you use the OSE Linux, it will be guaranteed that there are no software issues getting in the way of your learning.
 
While we do not require prior skill to join this workshop - the more skill that we have in the team of participants, the better will be the result. We expect people to work together as a team for a common goal, and we like it when participants teach one another new skills.
 
For development work, we invite our participants to join our <a href="http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/OSE%20Developers">development team</a>. During the workshop itself - expect to do some problem solving - as building a machine of high complexity typically has surprises.
 
The intended audience for this workshop is hackers - people who want to get their hands dirty - who are interested in the design and build of hardware. The intended audience is anyone interested in exploring the meaning of Open Source Product Development. We've been pioneering techniques of collaborative development for several years.
 
But be prepared - this is not for the faint-hearted. Our facility is raw and crude - a farm in the middle of nowhere, Missouri. By attending, you are helping us carry out our open source development mission.

Workshop immersion involves concept and practice, and includes a crash course on Open Source Ecology.  Participants become engaged in a part of OSE’s development process, where we produce open source blueprints for the infrastructures of civilization. Participants are introduced to basic principles of collaborative literacy - how the collaborative mindset can be used to solve wicked problems.
 
This workshop is intended for people interested in immersion, hands-on skills training and practical results.  We are especially seeking participants with an entrepreneurial mindset to expand open source production into the mainstream. We are exploring the potential of open source economics by determining the limits of social production: can distributed, collaborative, community supported manufacturing (CSM) be an alternative to centralized factories? The overall workshop is designed for people interested in transitioning from consumer to producer. We welcome both complete novices and those with experience. The critical part is willingness to learn.
 
By joining this workshop, you have an opportunity to be part of a community interested in developing products collaboratively and open source, so that everyone can benefit. OSE's goal is to promote right livelihood using open source - and part of that is starting enterprises.
