OSE has done a a little bit of work on the Open Source Stepper Motor Controller, which we intend to use on the CNC Torch/Router Table, Milling Machines, and other machines that are larger than desktop size. Pololu drivers are an open source standard in RepRap 3D printers.
The first step is to choose a design direction by analyzing available stepper motor driver chips - and discussing advantages and disadvantages of each.
