I think a cool way of solving this is to use a molten salt thermal storage system/ array at around 800 C working temperature. If it had an inlet for the flue of both the pyrolysis and pure combustion sources, it would actually cool the flue gases and be the first step towards cooling and storing flue gases for fractionally distilling them. Additionally, it would still be able to store heat from pure biomass combustion during inclement weather, such as week long snowstorms in winter.
