Activated charcoal is used in water purification to extract unwanted chemicals (etc) from impure sources (well, stream, pond, etc.).  Wikipedia has a nice article on it.  [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Activated_carbon] Perhaps we could produce activated charcoal as a bi-product of [[Biochar]].  The activation process increases the porosity of the carbon.

*Used as a more efficient/dense chemical filter/reactor compared to standard carbon sources such as charcoal
*Can be produced by high temperatures, medium temperatures and steam, or chemicals
