Basics
- Either with Urban Sprawl / Deforestation or alternatively with Rewilding / Wildlife Corridors etc, Conflicts between Human (and especially large/potentially dangerous) Non-Human Animals Can…and will Continue to…Occur
- Thus active planning for this is needed
- This page aims to outline such planning, as well as interlink with related (albeit more detailed or specific to a certain environment) pages
Concepts
Prevention
- 1.) Don’t do Deforestation/ Greenfield Development etc if you don’t have to
- Easier said than done, but prevention is easier than treatment
- 2.) If doing Land Clearing and such, intentional planning of a system of Nature Preserves , Wildlife Corridors , and Wildlife Crossings will reduce incidents, akin to how well planned Sidewalks and Landscaping will result in few (if any) Opportunity Paths
- Choices such as ( Electric ) Fencing , Prefabricated Concrete Walls or other Hardscaping Barriers, or
- Related Keywords:
- Landscape Ecology
- Exclosure
- Pest-Exclusion Fence
- Pest-Exclusion Trench doesn’t seem to be a term
Deconfliction
- Make it so they have nothing they want “in there” (Be it a Backyard, or a Dumpster, or to a lesser extent a Building
- Bear Resistant Trash Cans / Bear Resistant Dumpsters (+ a Practice of Keeping Lids on)
- Reducing disposal of Food Waste that way (via In-Sink Food Waste Grinders , Source Separated Organics disposal via more secure means, those Food Waste Grinder-Dehydrators etc)
- Bear Resistant Chicken Coops / Predator Protected Chicken Coops (for Wolves/Foxes/Lynxes etc)
- Make it scary/“not worth it”
- Stationing Beehives in the area has some evidence, as with protecting crops from Wild Elephants via the same method
- ”Scaring” Devices/Deterrents Such As:
- Motion Activated (even if as simple as a PIR Sensor ) Sprinklers (if water isn’t scarce)
- Speaker/Strobe Lights Systems (these can even be drone mounted as one Livestock Protection system did for wolf predation)
- Noisemakers/Vortex Cannons (used for Airport/Landfill/Wind Farm etc Bird Deterrence)
- Predators such as Birds of Prey for Birds, or Livestock Guardian Dogs etc, although these options may be cost prohibitive
