What does 3D printing have to do with construction? A lot. Using open source machines, we can grind bales of trash plastic, extrude 3D printing filament - and print building materials for the Seed Eco-Home and Aquaponic Greenhouse. This can save a lot of money, and is part of our work on the Open Source Materials Production Facility.
We reached a significant milestone - we have developed a 3D printer with only 40 unique parts. This is our 3D Printer Construction Set - like a set of Lego blocks for building a 3D printer of any size and shape. We are offering a workshop in Kansas City where you can build your own - in one day. Find out more and sign up -
The relevance to the next build of the Seed Eco-Home - prototype 2 coming in late fall - is that we intend to 3D print all the greenhouse glazing, fence posts, plumbing, and plastic lumber. That is serious business for open source. That is almost as good as printing money.
To get there - we are hiring. Volunteer to be a dedicated OSE Developer - see more information at http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/OSE_Developers.
OBI is a crowd-sourced effort to make affordable eco-housing widely accessible. You can make a contribution to this by signing up as an OSE Developer. The requirement is serious - 10 hours of time per week - but that's what it takes. Our goal is to recruit 12 teams of 12 developers to take this project to the next level. If you have an open mind to learn new skills, this may be an opportunity for you. Please pass this on to your friends.
