Analysis of Industry Standards Protocol for Workshops

In order to study prior work that has already been done on Workshops, a useful start is to:

  1. Do online research
  2. Survey people/groups who have already done build workshops

To do online research, simply search for all the workshops in the world, across all time - and list them one by one. Once you find them, it is useful to send a survey to each workshop organizer to build upon the learnings of that workshop. We discuss the survey next.

Survey for Workshop Organizers

The main purpose of the survey is to draw all possible lessons from people who have run workshops in the past. This helps to improve the OSE workshop - and to clarify both the Value Proposition and Unique Value Proposition.

There were between dozens to hundreds of formal or less formal build workshops - so getting data on at least 24 would be the minimum - but it would be important that the workshops were relatively recent, as 3D printers have improved dramatically and are getting better all the time. The main point to find out is how long a build takes, as that determines how this can compete with factory production.

Survey Design for Researching Past and Ongoing 3D Printer Build Workshops

  • How many 3D printers were built in the workshop?
  • How long did the build take?
  • Did everyone finish the build successfully?
  • Did everyone calibrate the printer and make their first print?
  • Which 3D printer was built? (Prusa, Ultimaker, MOST Delta, Makerbot, Folger Tech Prusa 2020, etc)
  • Approximately how many parts was the build made from, including nuts and bolts?
  • When did the 3D Printer Build Workshop happen?
  • Please provide a link to the workshop.
  • Did you organize this 3D printer build workshop, or just participate in one?
  • Is this workshop ongoing? How many times did this workshop take place?
  • Was there a fee for the workshop or a revenue model for making the workshop financially sustainable?
  • Is the workshop still being offered? Please provide a link to the workshop.
