Bulk Feed Storage Bin

Description

This storage bin fits 180 cu. ft. of bulk feed. Approximately weight is 3.5tons. It is made from lumber (2x4s 2x3s and 2x6s for posts,studs,sills), 1/2" exterior grade plywood at the sides, 3/4" ext. plywood at the bottom, 2x6s rafters/joists, 2x8 beams. Wood is chosen as it regulates better the humidity than a metal bin and does not "sweat". Probably some rodent proofing has to be done. Metal flashing is required at the lower end of the front and back panels, and the plywood joint of the front panel. It is 72in wide in order to fit on an axle so it will be portable. The 3.5 tons capacity should be enough to justify a delivery on site (most bulk feed companies require 3tons minimum order). The side, front, back and top panels should be fabricated and then assembled. The bottom should be precut and build in place.

The panels are assembled with 1/4" x 4" bolts plus some screws between the bolt for reinforcement. Across the panels there are 3/8" threaded rods with extra wide washers that keep the bin from sagging. The cleats at the front panel are secured with four(4) 4"x3/8" lag screws

Needs an opening about 16in (12in minimum) at the top panel so the boom from the delivery truck can unload the feed in the bin. Alternate way for filling the bin will be a hole at the side so the truck can auger the feed in, but although it is a lot easier that an opening through the roof, its not convenient for the delivery track.

The roof is separated in to parts, with the wider part fixed and assembled with the rest of the panels, and the narrow part hinged, so it can serve as the feed input. It needs some way of safety hasps that are not incorporated into the design for simplicity reasons. It may needs a brace at the back panel.
