Cement Impregnated Canvas

From Open Source Ecology
Jump to: navigation, search

Basics

  • Cloth Canvas that has been Coated/Enfused (AAAAA NEED A WORD) with cement or concrete with only VERY FINE aggregate
  • Can go from a dense, yet flexible cloth to a semi structual componet via just water
  • The literal "Just Add Water" material
  • May present health issues and enviromental issues if not handled/used/disposed of properly
  • Main use is temporary structures for Disaster Relief , Refugee Camps , or Construction Material Storage

A fabric/twine 1/4" matrix is printed in rolls and sewn to arbitrary shape. It is coated on one side with PVC (or bioplastic) and then impregnated with a concrete mixture to create thin flexible fabric panels that harden into solid concrete after wetting. Inflation makes for quick prefab buildings. I feel a derivative of such a flexible technology (sans inflation) could be a good pairing for CEB and strawboard for creating roofs and other structural components ... A similar thing could be done with agriculturally derived resins instead of concrete. Something to think about for the long term.

Potential Health Issues

  • Main is dust inhalation
  • Most likely a non issue, but encourage people all along the use chain to wear at least minor respritory protection as this is essentially cloth coatred with a fine powder

Enviromental Issues

Research Needed

  • How to impregnate canvas and other cloth with cement
  • How long it can be stored for
  • If it needs to be stored with Dessicants or other Dry Storage Methods , or if this increases shelf life
  • Structual Properties Mechanical Stresses simply test samples made in a Universal Test Machine
  • Chemical Properties (How it does agains acids and solvnets, may be neccisary in some use cases
  • Longevity tests (Make a tent, and check on it on a daily or monthly basis and reccord changes until total structual failure
  • How to patch leaks/if they can be patched (Does tape work like it does on canvas, also can cement impregnated canvas sheets be added, and wetted to bond and repair holes
  • HOW does it fail? Elastically? Explosively? Small Holes due to Erosion?
  • Can it be painted/does paint help
  • Does fine aggregate do anything
