Family Aimed Media With Philosophical Content

Basics

  • When one thinks of philosophy, often one imagines:
    • Old, Rich People thinking and talking in some "Plato Esque Palace Garden"
    • High Art
  • This is a possible source, but is VERY much the only source for Philisophical Content
  • Many movies/shows or even podcasts, even if poorly edited/produced or not entirely family friendly, as NSFW is Sometimes a Neccesity
  • In cases where the concept is non-violent etc this is easy to apply in a family friendly manner
  • Also some cultural traditions will consider certain "normal" things un-family friendly:
    • The first interacial kiss in "Star Trek" caused an uproar for the typical Think of the Kids Logical Fallacy
    • Same thing has been recently true with:
      • "Good Luck Charlie" a sitcom for kids, using the joke on "i met the friends mom" being both momes of a gay couple with said kid (a VERY witty joke, that is rarely used, and was not done before in a sitcom), lead to a HUGE uproar, despite the genious writing and humor
      • Newer shows such as "Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts" "Shera and the Princesses of Power" have been HEAVILY criticised for their Wokeness being a ploy, such as in the true phenomina of Psudo-Wokeness , when in fact they are beutifully written cartoons that are both family friendly, representative of many people, and FUN (and thus accesible to many, not just rich academics (Which ARE needed ie no Anti-Academic Rhetoric here) and thus can be given to the Everyman to help them improve (via the Growth Mindset they should have/learn to have)
  • TLDR even kids shows can teach something new, and writing them makes this knowledge accesible
  • As a forewarning don't think TOO much into some, especially fantasy, as this can be backwards/odd compared DIRECTLY to our world
    • ZooTopia is ESPECIALLY a bad case of this, as lions eat zebras, and thus are INHERENTLY a real danger (in our world at least) unlike Them

Forgive your Enemies

  • "Avatar:The Last Airbender" + "Legend of Kira" (the animated ones)
  • "Shera and the Princesses of Power"
  • The above to are oddly intresting as unlike other attempts the enemies didn't just "steal lil timmy's juicebox" (which IS important for kids) but in some instances were complicit in warcrimes, and even genocide
    • ESPECIALLY the charachters "Zuko" and "Uncle Iroh" in the top one, and "Catra" in the below one

Inclusion/Diverse Groups are "Just Normal" (ie not special, not evil, just "there" )

Preface

  • First Penguins tend to make a big deal out of diverse charachters, and thus many are good, but not the "best example"
  • The best have the charachters, but all "in universe charachters" don't really care about "aspect a" they just move on with the damn plot and/or don't even mention "it" or point it out
  • In "later times" this can even make it too subtle to see, thus making it need to be pointed out
    • For instance to me (Eric) mixed gender, trans people (headcannon by many on: one of the klingon (peak nerdery lol) ), and mix race crews is "a normal day at school" etc
    • In the 1950's this was UNTHINKABLE
    • PS Prejudice is not just "Bad", it's just plain stupid (ie less due to being WRONG, more so fearing new things due to previous isolation to said thing, and instead of a Growth Mindset some choose to Fear Monger and even "convince" others of just blatantly spooky ghost stories (ie Strawmen (Arguement) that are often redicoulus in retrospect

Examples

  • Nearly any 2000's and up show on nearly all accounts short of LGBT+ charachters, prison/economic status (although even sesame street is adding this in recent years and it is trickling down from their First Penguin use case, and Bilingual Culture (ESPECIALLY in the recently increasingly Xenophobic (and changing...) USA (ie the "spanish kid" or the "others" using spanish on occasion (ie talking to them/their parents, ordering a meal (cafe cubano...) )
  • On the note of lgbt charachters, Shera and the Princesses of Power seems to be the "first penguin" ESPECIALLY one to do it "right" as even a genocidal "terminator" esque charachter still uses someone's Prefered Pronouns like it is nothing WHILE torturing someone (as in even a dictator in a war finds it common sense)
  • On economic status/proson status it mainly seems to be pbs only, but this IS a hard issue in most cases (ie not wwooooooooooooooooo starving charachters, as this IS a problem that needs fixing, unlike 80% of most others)
  • On bilingual culture in the USA it is probably another 5-10 years for it to be near common sense (although may be first penguins set in florida etc)
