Introduction

To facilitate communication about the RCCS, it is useful to define a set of icons to communicate the components of the RCCS. The point of this is to address that:

  • The RCCS is a well-bounded set of items
  • Communication about the development of the RCCS, or a new meme for the development of civilization, is a complex topic, and should be simplified. One way to achieve this is via iconography.
  • Explainer Videos can be composed using these icons
  • Main icon categories can be created: OSA, RepLab, others
  • If documented in open document format, these can be utilized by any collaborator worldwide
  • Creative use of these icons can lead to lucic explanations of product ecologies, concepts, strategic deployment plans, design of specific RCCS implementation, long-term planning, funding, and publicity, among other purposes

Icon Specifications and Design

  • List is comprehensive in so far as the basic pattern language for advanced civilization is concerned
  • List is well-bounded; only most essential components are included
  • The icon should be a scalable vector graphic, usable in a program such as Inkscape, importable into a program such as Dia for making diagrams
  • Templates should be created for easy manipulation of these icons - see this Template Example
  • Source code for all diagrams (original file) should be available to anybody for reworking or collaboration purposes - to foster global collaboration
  • 3D, manipulable image (stl, or stereolithography) file should be created for every icon
  • Icons, .stl files, fabrication procedure documentation, video, 3D Cad, design drawings, concept diagrams, and other documentation should provide a complete set of
  • Product Selection Metric sould in general guide the choice of products selected. One criterion is displacement of suffering - if global corporations are the providers, they should be replaced by responsible production. This applies to necessary products that we can't live without, such as paper.
  • Product design should follow OSE Specifications
  • Discussion regarding the icons should take place at Icons Discussion
  • Icons should be designed such that funding proposals and strategic planning is facilitated via use of the icons
  • Proposed icon design - color image inside a color border. Border should contain annotation to make the icon self-explanatory. Border color should be selected according to purpose of discussion.
    • General discussion - border color should be black
    • Discussion on status of implementations - border color should reflect the status of development. Red for Prototype I, Yellow for Prototype II, Green for Prototype III.
    • Status of implementation may be specified further - CAD image may represent the CAD design (2D or 3D). A picture may represent the finished product.
  • RCCS Levels - RCCS I, RCCS II, RCCS III - may be indicated in border
  • Border may make note on cost, status, etc - as needed.
