Discussion of Themes
- Is on many things but mainly:
- Big Pharma (albeit inflated due to sci-fi ness, and being a VERY complex issue)
- Military Industrial Complex (ditto, also more corruption/ethic side)
- Secrecy in big government and corperate areas (both buzzwords)
- Abuse of science (abusing subjects, not proper Informed Consent , using hoops to jump through/beurocratic/medical processes and abbreviations/ling/jargon to shut down/oppress the everyman etc)
- In/Neo sincerity in big government and corperate areas
- Emotional Manipulation in big government and corperate areas ESPECIALLY marketing / psa's / pr
- Also dodging questions / stereotpyic "politician talk"
Also does lots of the "n a t u r a l t h e r e f o r a u t o m a t i c a l l y good/safe" marketing diolouge of the neo-hippie / insincire hippy ad style
- This is contrasted by the blatant examples, and parallels to, the usa opiod epidemic
- For instance the "magic plant" type feedstock is rainbow painted opium poppies
- This is contrasted by the blatant examples, and parallels to, the usa opiod epidemic
- Sort of shows how companies can "loose that spark"
- It’s like a gravity assist, if used right it helps significantly to get you where you need to be, if you dip in too far and get sucked in, you crash
- It also uses Brutalism (mainly in the corperate buildings' design) to relate the authoritarianism of modern capitalism to the authoritarianism of many places that used brutalism (USSR, etc)
- The “the giant” aside/monologue (need to grab it)
- It also has that political thriller aspect of nearly ALL charachters being two faced, having plots/alterior motives, and thus "can't trust anyone" theme
- One charachter, the "original" boss/founder "shoots the shit" and is blatantly honest, albeit sometime hurtfully so, this may be the creators "cure/solution"
- They are also a farmer (who bred/discovered the "magic plant"
- Could be interpreted (in a film snob way) to be an Everyman / insert of the WORKING CLASS (yells in communist/socialist analysis lol)
- almost all their lines are asides/monolouges too! (most about their regrets about "gettin into all this shit/fucking up)
- Also their Disconnect/Disrespect of the farmer's day to day life/workflow
- Despite "fetishization of it in ad's and culture / misinterpreting their public statements to fit the plan
- They are also a farmer (who bred/discovered the "magic plant"
- The military veterans are essentially being mk-ultra-ed (albeit WAy more scifi/parenoid etc;complex issue disclaimer...)
- They can also be seen as everyman, especially with how the usa honors military service as a civic duty of sorts
- They focus on and point out the contrast between this and how they are treated by society/the government as well
- ALSO the doctor's skepticism on cover stories for drug side effects (they are essentially amnestics in development disguised as ptsd treatment) is also sort of an aside to the viewer on "shutting up, and pushing foreward" in real life despite (fixable?) systemic issues (corruption, Doublethink etc )
- They can also be seen as everyman, especially with how the usa honors military service as a civic duty of sorts
- The fact that one of the drug's intended use is "brainwashing" ptsd victoms (mainly the poor, sexual assault/harassment victims, and veterans (especially ones involved in the "sketchier shit" / morally dubious battles/incidents/battles) to "return to normal" weith no change is BLATANT metaphor/symbolism
- Also when the corperations/governments are EMBOLDENED when they here this UNMORAL aspect/decision
- And how good uses (trauma victims etc, which is being explored at a low level (dmt/mescailne/ketamine drug trials for ptsd...) is abandoned IMEDIATLY for morally dubious, yet more profitable/politicaly advantages
- Using the "compensation" to silence people
- Arguements like "it's out there, so SOMEONE will do it" etc
- The use of the term "National Security" as a Double Speak Boilerplate for any ethically questionable stuff, that often HURTS the "nation" ie:
- Un-needed (on a strategic level, due to personal vendettas/schemes more so) wars
- Morally dubious programs (MK-ultra, surveilance/police state (granted no tin hat disclaimer, ya goofs)
- Potentially BAD conclusions (ie "givers vs takers" and then low level eugenics) being reasonable deductions from stuff
- One of the main charachters the "powerful working woman" is also sort of an "everyman" (semi-ironic word usage lol, academia eh?), and solution, as their stratagy leads to them being the hero, thus real world meaning, change needs "grit", planning, and strategy
- They are also the voice of reason for their anxious girlfriend/wife/partner/ f e m m i n i n e - f e m m i n i n e - r e l a t i o n a l - u n i t - p a r t n e r, a good foil
- again another note on "brutal honesty can be good and needed"
Potential Lesons "learned"
- A good cautionary tale (not outright "don't do that" ) as OSE goes into marketing, and grows as a company
- A lot of this is in end of season 1/all of season 2 fyi
- Hiding from issues, even if systemic (and "hard" to fix) doesn't solve them, it makes them worse
- Change Needs "Grit", Planning, and Strategy
- Brutal Honesty can be "Good" and Needed
- Even if low budget / "indie", with enough work, (and proper tools is framing, color grading, musical score (no matter how "simple" the music is, no AAA stars needed), and writing) it CAN be sucessful
- For instance despite being distributed by Amazon (one of the "giants" in the giants aside/mololouge/warning) it is "bold" "experimental" "well done" AND calls out it's own distributer (albeit thinly veiled and thus safe, especially to neo-woke comapnies lol)
