From Open Source Ecology
- David Nordahl 7:49 PM. the difficulty i had was as an individual selling groups on getting involved in OSE projects.. To me its seems like making toys and steampunk junk has got to get old at some point. I'm not an expert or personally very good at inspiring others to get involved in things... maybe if there was a way to somehow reach out as an organization to recruit contribution from hacker spaces..
- Catherine Fitts 7:51 PM -The permafracture chataqua http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chautauqua Institute is working on an area of great opportunity...
- Anthony Di Franco 8:07 PM -speaking of Peter principle, here's excellent reading a propos: http://www.ribbonfarm.com/2009/10/07/the-gervais-principle-or-the-office-according-to-the-office/ I need to be going, looking forward to Saturday and the next one, please point me to the Sat. schedule thanks all
- Fred followup -To address comments made during the Hangout. - What is the difference between Cyber-physical systems and Mechantronics? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyber-physical_system http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechatronics The short answer is "not much". The difference is really in the scope of the systems. An assembly plant is a cyber-physical system, a transfer machine in that plant is a mechatronic system. With cyber-physical systems (cyphy) there is also the notion that there humans are likely an important design element of the system. The AVM/META project includes treating the design and manufacture of mechatronic products as a cyber-physical system. What is the field of research interested in things like, process scheduling, workflow management, etc.? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operations_research In the early days of ISIS there was a fair bit of research in this area resulting in http://www.friartuck.net/. I don't know if much of that team or research remains at ISIS, I will check. How to build interest in OSE? Local design-build sprints? http://makewithmoto.com/ This bunch is visiting Vanderbilt on Aug 2-4 and is sponsored in part by ISIS. There are also http://makerfaire.com/map/ including one here in Nashville http://www.adventuresci.org/default.aspx?section=programs&title=Maker+Faire&page=417 Of course there is the liability issue so maybe just plastic and wood prototypes of the real machines? This would make real the promise of a village in a container.
