Basics
- They did a project titled “Methanol/DI-Methylether (DME) Duel Fuel RCCI Combustion Engine”
- It was essentially an OTS Diesel Engine Modified With:
- Electric Turbochargers for Engine-Independt Varying of EGR
- An Off The Shelf Methanol Fuel Injection System
- A Semi-Custom DME Fuel Injection System
- To Remedy the Fuel Lubricity issue, a “bubbler” filled with Rapeseed Oil Methyl Ester (aka Canola Oil Biodiesel ) was used in between the DME supply, and the final Fuel Rail / Injector side
- Sealing issues were mentioned (an Off The Shelf Pump used for the DME in particular had to be rebuilt supposedly), PTFE was used and remedied this issue
- Liquid Phase LPG Fuel Injection was used rather than gas phase so care was taken to prevent/deal with Vapor Lock as well
Questions to Ask
- How many Hours the engine has run for (especially in the proper RCCI mode)
- Was there any aspect of Lubricating Oil Dilution happening with the Methanol and/or DME?
- Had any tests with Ethanol (or the less likely, but more ideal from an “end user” standpoint Butanol ) been done instead of Methanol
- (If it isn’t completed before making contact) are they willing to provide more information/internal materials
