Talk:Firestop
Learned about this a bit in electrical, i'll eventually get around to making pages on it. I think it was moreso a commercial thing, but basically you will have a Firewall (not the software kind), and that will be rated for X amount of hours burn time. Then any time you make a Wall Penetration (Run a cable through, add an HVAC Duct etc), you have to use the right materials (if i remember correctly), then the outside needs to be filled in.
They have all sorts of products, like User: Marcin was posting on the non-talk section of this page, but mainly:
- Fire Pillows (Used in a similar manner to Concrete Masonry Units / Earthbag Construction for large gaps, but often squished around cable trays/runs etc
- These may need to be sealed with Fire Sealant but i am not too knowledgable on this topic (yet), and that also may vary with Local Codes
- Fire Sealant (Essentially like any Silicone Caulk etc, but with Fire Retardants / Intumescent Materials] added in
- Firestop Putty (Similar concept to Fire Sealant but it behaves like PlahDoh / Molding Clay )
- Firestop Mortar / Cement
I need to check my notes section on my phone, i forget if any of these were a "Pain to Work With" from his experience, or if any had major Staining issues for Clothes and/or Skin (Firestop materials must be red and left visible iirc)
It is interesting once you know they are a thing you can see them if looking at the ceilings at various commercial/industrial places you go to. I might have a picture from the "Hands on Lab" at FSCJ somewhere showing where they either used Putty or Sealant around some IMC / RMC and hydronic heating/cooling pipes if i remember correctly. My phone is filling up again, so it may be a good time to get the photos from phone to computer to on wiki perhaps (at least on-discord)
Anywho, that's the rant of what i know / a groundwork of what pages i could make + places i can dig for info in, i'll keep you posted
