Absolutely wild! Good thing the contractor seemed reasonable at least. I hope the Law Enforcement prove to be as well. Also hope your lawyer hunting is going/went well.
I'm no lawyer, and money is no substitute for fully grown trees; no shortcut for that, but "treble the value" sounds like a start!
I hope everything turns out alright, and it's just some jerk who happens to be in the area, not some "them damn city slickers" kind of deal.
