Water Softening

Basics
- The process of making Hard Water “softer” by removal and/or replacement of various Salts
Methods
Ion Exchange Resin
- Ion Exchange Resin
- A bunch of resin (plastic) beads that via some chemistry dark magic can “grab” a Cation or Anion
- This needs to be regenerated by either a DIFFERENT solution, typically standard salt or a brine of it
- This is considered wastewater and typically routed to sewer
Reverse Osmosis
- Uses pressure (and thus likely more energy/money, at least in the short term) to separate slightly salty water into VERY salty brine and Near Deionized Water
- Brine may be even saltier than Ion Exchange and thus Scale Buildup / Disposal may be more pertinent of a decision
