DPV Orientation and Message Board

Purpose

To manage expectations and facilitate a healthy and efficient working and living environment, all visitors to FeF must review the following community standards:

About Maysville, Missouri

Maysville is a small, rural town with basic conveniences: grocery store, Dollar General, Casey's gas station, BBQ stand, hardware store. FeF is approximately 3 miles south of Maysville. Please more information see Maysville, MO City Data.

• Cameron, MO is 12 miles south east of Maysville and has fast food, Wal-Mart, and motels.
• Saint Joseph, MO is 36 miles west of Maysville and has most commercial conveniences of a small metropolis
• Kansas City, MO is 65 miles south of Maysville and has conveniences of a metropolis as well as attractions and entertainment

Work week

The work week at OSE is Mon-Fri, starting with a 9:00 AM meeting. The required work week is 40 hours. Some DPVs choose to work more than 40 hours per week to maximize their “experience” and exposure to different challenges. This choice is left up to each person's discretion.

DPVs receive daily work day direction from the Product Lead. Documentation DPVs receive work day direction from the Documentation Manager. Deviations from established tasks must be cleared with the Product Lead and Documentation Manager.

Collaboration

The core role of on-site participants is to help develop the Global Village Construction Set. The Product Lead sets the course of research direction, and expects commitment to this path from all involved. The typical settomg is one or more groups working collaboratively on one or more development directions. We expect focus on the research direction for the 40 hour week, and leave the rest of the time to the discression of participants.

• When receiving mail, include “Open Source Ecology” in the “To” line with “ATTN:” to your name.

DPV Meals

• When 5 or less DPVs are onsite, a weekly stipend of $35 per person will be provided to offset the cost of groceries.
• When 6 or more DPVs are onsite, a weekly stipend will be provided as a lump sum to cover the upcoming week's dinner. The DPV provided the lump sum is responsible for meal planning and sourcing groceries for the upcoming week. The Product Lead is responsible for allocating meal planning and grocery run time the week prior. DPVs are responsible for managing cooking responsibilities. The purpose of assigning a single dinner cook during high capacity durations is to keep the kitchen manageable.
  • Please note that OSE may not be able to accommodate a restrictive diet.
• Examples of easy to prepare "family-style" dinner meals can be found at the Recipes page.

DPV Travel

OSE Staff is available to pick up and drop off DPVs as far as Kansas City. This includes Kansas City International Airport (MCI).

HabLab

Hablab is a dorm style facility with a 5 shared bedrooms, a single bathroom with individual showers, a washer and dryer, and a living and work space. OSE's office is located in Hablab. Hablab is an early structure, built with the CEB Press.

HabLab standards and cleaning

• Outside shoes are not to be worn in HabLab. A shoe rack is available for shoe storage and house slippers.
• DPVs are expected to keep HabLab clean.
• DPVs are expected to not leave personal items strewn in living and working spaces.

Kitchen

The kitchen is equipped with a stove top, 3 toaster ovens, refrigerator, 2 microwaves, crock-pot, pots/pans, and other commonly used small cooking utensils.

• DPVs are expected to keep the kitchen clean.
  • Food storage outside the kitchen is prohibited. Individual cupboard are available to store sealed dry food.
  • Dishes must be washed immediately after use.
  • Kitchen counters and stove must be wiped down after use.
  • Food must not be washed down the sink. A compost bucket is provided.

Bathroom

The bathroom is co-gender, both male and female use the same facility. A closed bathroom door signals that the bathroom is in use. Knock to verify that the bathroom is in use.

• DPVs are expected to keep the bathroom clean and tidy.
• Do not leave personal items in the showers.

Bedrooms

The bedrooms are equipped with 1-3 twin beds, each with a (washed) mattress cover. If you are unable to share a bedroom, inform the Technical Community Manager (TCM) prior to accepting an offer as a DPV.

• DPVs are expected to keep bedrooms clean and tidy.

Hablab and Workshop are equipped with free wifi.

Recycling and Trash

• Recycling bins are available for paper, metal, glass and plastics.
• DPVs are responsible for taking out the trash prior to Thursday morning pick up.

DPV Visitors

All DPV visits should be coordinated with the Technical Community Manager and approved by the Product Lead or Documentation Manager and the Operations Manager. See the Dedicated Project Visit page for more information about the application process.

Parking

Park in front of the Workshop. When unloading items, temporary parking is permitted in front of the Hablab. Street parking is not permitted by the city of Maysville.

Smoking

The smoking area is behind HabLab. Use of a butt can, provided near the smoking area, is mandatory. Smoking will not be permitted, should cigarette butts be found on FeF grounds.

Wildlife

• Wildlife includes snakes, spiders, wasps, raccoons, and deer. See native Missouri snakes and reptiles and native spiders.
• To mitigate mice:
  • OSE has a rural farm cat named Boots. If you are allergic to cats, inform the TCM prior to accepting an offer as a DPV.
  • Food storage outside the kitchen is prohibited.
  • Dishes must be washed immediately after use.

Weather

Northern MO has inclement weather. This includes extreme heat and winter weather conditions (snow/ice), tornadoes, thunderstorms, flooding, and earthquakes. The CDC offers instructions and guidance for inclement weather conditions and natural disasters at http://emergency.cdc.gov/disasters/.

What to bring to FeF

• Bedding/pillow for a twin mattress (or sleeping bag)
• Towel
• Personal toiletries
• Shower Shoes (required)
• House slippers or socks
• Steel-toed boots (required) - notify TCM if you do not have steel-toed boots, OSE may be able to provide a loaner pair
• Water bottle
• Rain resistant coat
• Rain boots
• Work gloves, earplugs, protective eye wear - provided by OSE
• Laptop & scrolling mouse for Sketchup, if doing 3D modeling
• Camera or camera phone recommended for documentation purposes
• Laundry bag
• Flashlight
• Long pants - workshop environment will stain clothes with grease
• Toiletry bin, bucket, or bag
