The tools under development are to help you! We are building the world's first replicable self-sufficient village, so that anyone can "buy out at the bottom" to transform society by transcending survival - so that we all can evolve to freedom. When the project is complete, replication can be had by all at low cost. You may have seen our documentation of progress at our weblog. We are making real things, not just ideas. Any donation, big or small, can help. Thank you!

Generating and maintaining True Fans is a way for individual and small groups of artists, producers, inventors and makers to crowd fund their continuing work. Open Source Ecology is looking for people to fund its projects by donating a fixed amount per month. The Standard Subscription is $10 per month. As of September, 2010, there have been requests for larger donation options. In response, we created Gold, Gold Extra, Platinum, and Angel subscriptions at $20, $30, $50, and $100 per month, respectively.
We have shown consistently that we spend nearly 100% of donations directly on prototyping and product release work surrounding the 40 items of the Global Village Construction Set

We are seeking individuals to come to Factor e Farm for one month project-based visits to help develop the GVCS and the infrastructure at Factor e Farm. Proposals for projects are being accepted and reviewed. The suitability of proposals depends largely on a candidate's level of skill and experience. This is also our route for accepting new people for long-term stays as part of the Factor e Farm experiment.

Ideally we are looking for:

* Confident and highly dynamic self learners and researchers.
* People motivated by innovation and change, who are open to new ideas and excited by diversity of thought.
* Developers who can take a project from concept drawing to real world implementation.
* Those comfortable in rural and rustic settings.
* Willing team members, self starters, and project leaders.

We are offering a place where you can put the philosophy of sustainability into action. We are a physical experiment in building a post industrial global village - a space for all people to learn and grow. Because of the diversity of our activities, we believe a Factor E experience can be exceptional and life-changing, but that doesn't mean it's for everyone. There are countless opportunities available in the realm of sustainability and justice (ie. wiserearth; idealist; organicvolunteers; WWOOF; growing growers--(a Kansas City area based farmer's training program)).

We are looking for Project Managers to lead the development of tangible products to be deployed at Factor e Farm. At present, we have 3 projects being managed: the CEB, Sawmill, and Solar Turbine. Each of these projects may be divided into sub-projects. For example, the Solar Turbine may be divided into the steam engine, metal casting, open source lathe, and other sub-projects. If you are interested in leading the development of one of the components or sub-components of the GVCS, please let us know.

What about food?
Some food is grown on-site.  Everybody participates in agricultural production.  However, we will still need to buy some food and we are asking for $50-100 per month to help cover costs.  $20-40 per week or $5-10 per day.  This is our cost estimate and I believe quite reasonable.  I spent a summer planning meals for 100 volunteers with the budget of $1.06 per meal per person per day.  We got discount prices ordering from big distributors like Sysco.  We did not grow any of our own food.  A dollar per person per meal per day is approximately $90 per month.  If this is not within your budget, please let us know and we can work out something else.

We have a very small kitchen with a propane stove, but no oven.  We do have a solar cooker oven with low, slow heat, a juicer, a grinder, and a blender.

Communication
Our sprint phone has poor reception on site, but there are certain "hot spots" that receive better signal than others.  The performance of other cell phone companies may vary, but rural areas like this one are notoriously under served with reception.

We have a 1.5M land line with unlimited internet access.

Introduction
The Beauty:
We collect rainwater from the roof.
A composting system is our toilet.
Chickens and goats provide us with eggs and milk.
The car is converted to run on Waste Vegetable Oil (WVO) from restaurants.
And our electrical power is generated from the same WVO with a Lister engine.
Sounds simple and idyllic, doesn't it?  Ecological living at its pinnacle.
The Truth:
But what happens when the water system sprouts a leak; you're ready for a hot shower that isn't working; the humanure bucket needs to be emptied; the chickens stopped laying due to a heat wave; the car breaks down- twice- because the WVO clogged and snapped the injection pump; and the power generator (the Lister) cracks from insufficient antifreeze during a winter cold spell.
All of these events have happened at Factor E.  Sometimes, more than one at a time.  We say this not to scare you, but to prepare you.  Life is beautiful, but not always easy.  As inconvenient as these upsets are, I wouldn't trade them in for city water or store bought eggs.  These experiences teach us fundamentals, like the value of water and the reality of raising food.
When a difficulty does arise, we expect people to take responsibility for their own needs.  If the water is down and you need to have a hot shower, we expect you to share in the responsibility of making it happen.  That is what creates a progressively more beautiful Factor E Farm.
Beauty and Truth Combined
To reconcile the good and bad points of our life, it must be emphasized that things change on a daily basis. For example, we just secured almost 2 kilowatts of solar cells. After we set them up, we'll produce twice as much electricity as we currently use. We will be able to displace the use of the noisy Lister engine-generator completely - until we grow further and more people arrive.
Given the water dilemmas, we have succeeded in reaching water with our well-drilling rig. This work is in progress. And we'll be back-hoeing several storage ponds for irrigation water.
Most importantly, we'll be doing major building using the advanced CEB building method, using the machines that we have built. Moreover, we are building our own multipurpose tractor, to reduce our heavy equipment overhead.
The point is - when we hit a snag - we come up with a solution. At all steps, we are guided by principles of ecology and replicability. When we build or do something, we always ask, how can we make it accessible to others or make it into a high performance product. That is the core of our life.
What would I do at the farm?
This is all negotiable, but here is an idea of our proposed lifestyle.

1-2 hours: Personal development, study, meditation time.  We strongly encourage volunteers to take time to meditate, pray, do yoga, journal, read, have quality intellectual time, etc. This is where we encourage people to cultivate other brain functions, focusing, and other spiritual activities related to peak performance.
2-8 hours: Pursue research and development. This is the core activity. Factor e Farm is intrinsically linked to the non-profit work of Open Source Ecology (OSE).  The goal of OSE is creating "Just Tools for Life" for a "Global Village Construction Set."  For those with motivation and/or skills, this type of work might be the major part of your day:  Designing, Modeling, Networking, Studying, Writing, Building, Testing...
.5-2 hours: Chores: from cooking to cleaning to brewing biodiesel, everyone pitches in.
1-4 hours: Agricultural activities.  Everyone participates in food life on the farm.  This may include planting, harvesting, weeding, fertility building...
1-4 hours: Main physical work.  This depends on what our current goals are. For example, we might be building with Compressed Earth Blocks, fixing the shower system, or processing food.

[edit] Volunteer Development - Motivating Alignment and Collaboration of Volunteers
The first step in aligning a dedicated and voluntary team of developers is to recognize that such a team is available. Normally, the success of gathering collaboration is unquestioned, yet, in this case, it is instructive to raise the question whether such collaborators exist because we are looking for full commitment from unpaid individuals, and on top of that, for a project that is far beyond the norms of established society. To convince ourselves that such a team exists, we must prove:
  1. the endeavor has high value
  2. the value is practical or achievable
  3. volunteers can comprehend the value
  4. people without ego and angst exist in the population at large
  5. the value of the endeavor is so high that egoless people can shift their full attention to the endeavor.
Note that we assume that the unpaid individuals - those, in particular, with full commitment - must qualify as what is best dubbed independently wealthy. These individuals are those who have free time because they do not have to work to make a living. These individuals could be ones who either have big savings, low expenditures, or both - such as monied individuals, voluntary simplicity followers, the unemployed, or those who do not have significant costs of living because of their particular situations.
1. High Value. We start with the stated goal as the definition of value: The approach of this project is to identify a small but comprehensive infrastructure base of robust, widely applicable solutions for living and working such that transforming the world is a byproduct. The intent is to produce a replicable business model for a number of successful and optimized enterprises, by which individuals may engage in right livelihood activity as defined in previous sections. This approach has clear value.
2. Practicality. A replicable business model for optimized enterprises is definitely achievable. We simply take existing enterprise models, work to optimize them, and release the knowhow in the open source to make it replicable. If the enterprise model is one that is successfully engaged by others, then it will be even more profitable if optimization adds further value. The key is to adapt progressive, ecological enterprise to the type of profit margins that are quite attractive to individuals, while ensuring that principles of right livelihood are followed. Specifically, the particular enterprises in the small but comprehensive infrastructure base must achieve a high Right Livelihood Selection Score in order to be included in the set of choices that collaborators agree to develop. This score automatically ensures the high potential impact for the transformative nature of enterprise deployment.
3. Understandability - This is perhaps the most difficult point to prove, because understandability of this endeavor suffers from grave translatability issues due to the social conditioning of the population at large. It is difficult to convince people that an entirely different model of social organization which transcends centralization and top-down control - namely Right Livelihood - can be implemented, if the total force of social conditioning indicates to the contrary. It is required of the few people who are to understand this proposition that they are independent thinkers largely independent of the military industrial state. Some of these people still exist. These people need to be sufficiently connected to the land and nature in order to comprehend that right livelihood is a prerequisite for a harmonious, truthful way of living. Such individuals are the only ones who place sufficient priority to right livelihood that they would consider engaging in this project.
4. Ego and Angst - Even the people who understand this proposition as in point 3 will not truly understand it unless they conquer any ego and angst that stands in the way. This requires spiritual evolution on the part of the potential collaborator. There are many such individuals on planet Earth.
5. Full Attention - This is a hard requirement, but if people value the proposition sufficiently, the natural consequence is that they engage this proposition with full heart. The transformative potential is clear to such individuals, and they see that their own integrity leads them to promote the effort with their full energy.

There are many ways you can help contribute to creating the first Open Source Global Village:

 • We need help at all levels of organizational, research, and hands-on work.

 • You may visit Factor e Farm to help design, build a prototype, and implement a project. This can mean visits of a week minimum at a time, or full on site, year around living at Factor e Farm. If you wish to visit to work on your project, and if we have no additional housing (check with us on this), you will have to either bring your own housing (tent, camper, etc), or need to build your own shelter, or donate $430 to have it built before you arrive (Once the CEB press has been modified, your shelter will be a CEB house, not a Solar Cubicle). If you are staying for an extended time (1 month or more), you will also need to build your own Organoponic Raised Bed using materials provided, or contribute $225 to have it built before you arrive. In that case, you will then be fully responsible for your shelter and your raised bed while you are on site. Please consider volunteering at least once before you decide that you wish to take this route - see Volunteer at Factor e Farm. Living on site is a major lifestyle change which may not be for everyone.
 • If you do not have the skill or expertise to help us design and you know visiting Factor e Farm isn't for you but you'd like to see a project finished, you may donate material or funds to a specific project.

 1. Build some of the machines yourself, test their performance and report back any difficulties or problems you faced while building and using them;
 2. Find groups of people who could benefit the most out of these machines, but who still don't know about their existence. Let them know. Eco-villages, permaculturists, farmers, and so on; Report your efforts on Outreach 2010;
 3. Visits the pages listed at the Category: Collaboration Discussions page to get to know current collaboration ideas; Create new pages in that category;
 4. Propose better ways to do something we're doing, or propose new things we should do.
 5. Add more ideas to this page
 6. Produce CAD drawings and fabrication drawings for the tractor, CEB press, Power Cube, and rototiller.

=Core Team Membership= - those people who are physically located at Factor e Farm on a long-term basis

Open Source Ecology at Factor E Farm has many opportunities for participation. For those of you interested in a hands-on experiential approach, a long-term (one month or more) stay may be a good option for you. We want this to be the "right" experience for you, so read the blurb below to get a feel of what life might be like on the farm. We also welcome student research projects, on site or remote. There is a large number of practical topics that may be turned to a research/independent study project, paper, or thesis. You have the opportunity to do exactly what you want and get college credit at the same time. We have a Ph.D., which helps facilitate academic credentialing for your study. If you are interested, please fill out the application and email it to: opensourceecology [at] gmail.com.

Where will I stay?

The present option (as of 2.9.09) is on-demand housing construction using standard construction methods, at $400 per 8x8x8 foot solar cubicle. This is until we master the CEB-Sawmill infrastructure. See our community portal for our program until the end of 2010.

What we are.

 • A research and development center
 • A farm
 • A network
 • A diversity of ecological living
 • An experiment station
 • Explorers of truth
 • Durable
 • Visionary
 • Creative
 • Self-directed
