Basics

  • A (Series of?) Single Cylinder Spark Ignition Engine(s) by Honda
  • Stock are Gasoline, need to see if stock Propane / Autogas etc exist
  • Commonly used for Gas Powered Pumps , Gas Powered Pressure Washers etc

Stock Specifications

  • Carbureted
  • OHV Based
  • Automatic decompression system (releases valves for the hand pull cord “spin up” to make it easier (if i understand correctly), not as essential as in small diesel engines but neat regardless
  • Quote from the EU Site:
    • 4 stroke single cylinder
    • OHV petrol engine
    • 25° inclined cylinder horizontal shaft
    • CYLINDER SLEEVE TYPE:
      • Cast iron sleeve
    • BORE X STROKE:
      • 68 x 54 mm
    • DISPLACEMENT:
      • 196 cm³
    • COMPRESSION RATIO:
      • 8.5 : 1
    • NET POWER
      • 4.3 kW ( 5.8 HP ) / 3600 rpm
    • CONT. RATED POWER
      • 3.3 kW ( 4.4 HP ) / 3000 rpm
      • 3.7 kW ( 5.0 HP ) / 3600 rpm
    • MAX. NET TORQUE
      • 12.4 Nm ( 1.26 kgfm ) / 2500 rpm
    • IGNITION SYSTEM
      • Transistorised
    • STARTER
      • Recoil (el. start optional)
    • FUEL TANK CAPACITY
      • 3.1 Liter
    • FUEL CONS. AT CONT. RATED POWER
      • 1.7 L/h - 3600 rpm
    • ENGINE OIL CAPACITY
      • 0.6 Liter
    • DIMENSIONS (L X W X H)
      • 321 x 376 x 346 mm
    • DRY WEIGHT
      • 16.1 kg

Potential Modifications

New Frame / Fuel Tank etc

  • Mainly making it into a Powercube
  • Could also in theory make it into a generator cart type thing, or a generator in a hush box

New Air Intake

  • Uncertain how much it would help, but could use a Cold Air Intake type thing

Fuel Injection

Fuel System

  • Upgrade the Fuel System (If Needed: Tank, Pump, Fuel Lines/Fuel Rail, Fuel Injectors, etc) to handle E-58 or ideally pure Methanol / Ethanol etc (Also look into Racing Gasoline
  • Add in an Autogas System (Most likely Gas Phase, although especially with high rpm and/or boost, Liquid Phase Autogas Systems are interesting due to the cooling effect
  • Water Injection / Methanol Injection are semi related

New Piston

New Sleeve

  • Different Metals
  • Needs to be looked into more before i add to this section (unless any of you know more of course!

New Valves

New Ignition System

  • Higher than stock revs, and ‘’supposedly’’ a pile of boos+fuel will make stock ignition unreliable
  • This seems like an unlikely need, but still worth looking into
  • Also need to see how easily the stock “transistorized ignition system” meshes with the os ecu and such

Oil System Upgrades

  • A better oil filter / a Bypass Oil Filter
  • A better Oil Pump
    • Via a larger pump, or one operating on a separate circuit from lubrication, yet tied to the same Wet Sump it could be made into an Oil Cooled Engine (performance closer to a Water Cooled Engine but with less complexity (although unlike a PROPER oil cooled engine, it probably wouldn’t have the oil channels near TDC etc to really optimize the effect), could maybe do this with custom parts perhaps?
  • Upgrade to a Dry Sump system

Camshaft Upgrades

  • Need to see what it actually HAS first, but especially with alternative fuels and/or mods messing with the compression ratio, having something like IVVT would be helpful, could also allow for the Atkins Cycle etc
  • More simple mechanically, albeit more complex fabrication capability wise would be something like DOHC etc for efficiency optimized for multiple rev bands, but this isn’t as needed for a stationary engine that should optimally be held at a certain rom unlike a constantly accelerating/decelerating motor vehicle.
