Basics
- A Genset TYPICALLY using a Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engine (with some exceptions)
- Typically also a Single Cylinder Internal Combustion Engine / “ Small Engines “
Use Cases
Emergencies
- For Emergency Backup Power
- GRANTED depending on Local Grid Reliability, the need may not be that great
- GRANTED this also varies with things like Medical Equipment Needs / Heat and/or Cold Tolerance of the people involved etc (Also other aspects of a Hurricane Preparedness Kit / Blackout Preparedness Kit etc
- TLDR: Flashlights / Candles and a Propane Heater / Indoor Safe Fueled Heater + Warm Clothes/Blankets will MOSTLY work and be cheaper, but may not work in all situations
- Also Wet Bulb Events may be harder to deal with than cold per-se
- Pursuing Community Scale Microgrids etc may also be better than a Hyper-Individualist “A Generator in Every Home“ type situation
- GRANTED depending on Local Grid Reliability, the need may not be that great
Power Tools/Lighting
- While this is LESS relevant with the advent of Cordless Tools and LED Lights etc, having a Generator for a Jobsite or Work Truck CAN make sense
- Note however that Air Tools are more Intrinsically Safe thus for some jobs going that route may make more sense
Support of Off Grid Systems
- Essentially use as a mini-Peaker Plant / on Cloudy Low-Wind days etc
Industry Standards
Honda vs Harbor Freight
Impressive.
More
- 2kW $369 great reviews - [1]
Internal Links
- Genset
- Soft Starter
- CHP / Charcoal Gasifier / Central Burner Unit
- Solar Car (A Hybrid Vehicle could be made via a Solar-BEV with a SMALL Portable Generator thrown in the back; In a manner similar to Powercubes this would make Engine Maintenance easy)
External Links
- A Video by the YouTube Channel “Matt Risinger” Titled “Which Generator to Buy? Small, Medium, or Large?” ( ‘’’~22 Minute Watch’’’ )
- Sponsored by Champion, so MINOR Conflict of Interest, but they declare this and also mention other brands/the information is transferable to other manufacturers’ devices for the most part
- Mentions Starting Watts vs Running Watts , Gasoline vs Gasoline-Propane Dual Fuel and Gasoline-Propane-Natural Gas Tri-Fuel Generators
- Mentions Recoil Start vs Pushbutton Electric Start
