Good response to my questions from Jeff Moe:
Kits look good.  Coordinated with all the attendees and the MakerPlace people.

• I'd like to get a handle on the capabilities of the KIT, as compared to the new TAZ 3. You had mentioned it doesn't have the digital display. Does it have untethered printing? Does it compare to he earlier TAZ, such as the version reviewed in the Make Magazine 3D Printer edition (attached)
Bought a WIFI hotspot to ensure that we'll have good internet for Dozuki and MatterControl downloads.  Lars will bring the software on a drive as a backup.

It is basically the same thing, except we excluded the GLCD panel. That can be added later, no problem. The panel also has the SDCard, so it would need to be connected to a computer to print. That said, we can change the kit to include the LCD too, if it is really needed. We just thought kit people would try to save as much as possible and that can add $100 or something.
Prepped tools and video camera and projection.

• Can the “missing” elements be added to the Kit if the customer wants the upgrade?
Tuesday April 29, 2014
Yes.
Final prep for the 3D Printer Workshop.

• In my notes, I had the Kit price as $638. Is that correct? If the upgrades are possible, how much would that add?
Attendance is excellent.  Two more registrations since the close of the Eventbrite site for a total of 10 Kits plus 3 additional Team Members.

That sounds ballpark about right. We'll see if we can do better.
Tech Journalist Lee Goldberg, the host of the 3D Printer World Expo, will be attending to help with documentation and whatever else we need. Also, professional mechanical design engineer, Jack Bell from San Diego has volunteered to help on Friday and Saturday with the building.

• Is end of March still look like a likely timeframe for the Kits to be ready?
Lars has a new 3D Printing Overview presentation he'll be doing on Friday evening before we get into the kit preparation.

Yes.
Kits arrived today and I'll be confirmation parts against the BOM.

• Big Question – It would be fantastic to come learn it, but for the first Workshops we would love to have a Lulzbot person be there as an expert instructor. Would it be possible to hire you, or one of your associates to join us? We're envisioning about 2 1/2 days for the workshops. We'd like to have the attendees build and then be able to troubleshoot the printer. We'll also include material on modeling, print software etc. — We hope to customize the workshops based on where we are going.

Final 3DP part arrived.

That sounds interesting, but we probably won't have the manpower to go send you someone. You are more than welcome to come visit here.
Video editing on TAZ how-to

• It looks like we may be getting a lot of interest from college architecture programs. Are there any special “selling points” you see for that audience?

Jerry Miller met with grant team and confirmed plan for funding EAT workshop facility

Communication with Jeff Moe regarding the OHAI Kits.
Crowdfunding

Main note from Jeff:
Astounding results with Kickstarter campaigns for 3D printers.  i.e. Goal 31,000 Funding 1.2million  -- Goal 49,000 Funding 650,000.  However these successes have lead to great difficulty in delivery all the promised machines.  Sourcing parts, manufacturing and especially shipping have turned into very challenging and expensive issues.

"The kits are still a ways off.
Also, support is hard as the focus is on manufacturing and the support infrastructure not ready.

We are building many machines right now. We recently finished all our back orders and have 43 boxed up on hand ready to ship. We can build 10+ machines a day. We did 14 on Friday. This batch is around 420 machines.
Friday Jan 31, 2014
We are ordering for 512 more machines for assembly. We will likely order all the kit parts at that time. It can take awhile for it all to arrive, maybe March. By that time, we will have a new area of our factory floor laid out where we will be building the kits. The kits will be minimal versions with low cost in mind, so they likely won't include parts like the LCD. I don't have a BOM handy, but I mailed our CTO to get it and we'll put it on the devel server. Lets us know what ideas you may have for the kit itself.
Day One of 3D Printer World Expo in Burbank, CA - Attended excellent seminars

Do you know how many kits you'll want to start with? Any projections for how many for the coming months?

Further San Diego planning.  Communication with Jerry Miller, Scott Murray's partner:
Hi all,
I am Scott’s partner in the Encinitas EAT center. I would like to find out a little more about your workshop interests. We are working on a Farm Shed (Work Shop/Storage) facility. (See attached concept drawings). The idea is to use this facility for not only a place to begin building our various farm structures and components but also as a workshop field station. A base of operations so to speak for the general surrounding community.
We are partnered with a local architectural firm and are working on multiple projects for the EAT center/farm. If you are interested in investing in this Farm Shed with us, we could explore arranging a series of on-going projects &/or workshops. The building codes in California are quite strict and this project is on State owned public school property, further complicating the process. The reason for using a shipping container Farm Shed is to expedite something on site to work from while permits and other regulatory approvals are being processed.
We presented the idea to OSE last year on setting up a makers work shop here. We decided to move forward with this concept and plan to go for State Approval sometime next week.
Let me know your thoughts. We may want to reroute your tour so I could be present to discuss real time opportunities at the EAT site.

Then we will move 7 miles to lunch at Ciao which has a fine Italian buffet.
Then we can drive to the Encinitas site and tour our school site.

**Explore EXPLAINER STYLE videos/graphics for all productions.
This way you can take the 210 east to the 15 south and exit to the farm 1.2 miles west on Gopher Canyon... at 1319 Tarek Terrace, Vista Ca.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Explainer_video
We will head west down Gopher Canyon to lunch, which is fast, easy and wonderful...
From Ciao it is a 20 minute drive on hwy 78 to hwy 5 south to Encinitas Blvd at 2 miles east of hwy 5 at 499 Quail Gardens Drive, Encinitas, Ca.
Then it is a nice afternoon drive up hwy 5 against some of the traffic back to Burbank.

Lasersaur build documentation.
-- Meeting with Yann re: Microcar:

Friday, November 1, 2013
Good meeting.  Feels like there are still many technological hurdles.  Goal is create the first function prototype... probably to be considered v0.5.  Essentially a proof of concept. -- From there it can be quickly improved and hopefully be incorporated in the workshop model.  --  Concerns are mechatronic safety, hydraulics/ front suspension and especially the power electronics.

Lasersaur Documentation prep - I used Trovebox App on my iPhone to take photos... uploaded to Laser Cutter Trovebox AlbumAt the same time I made them Public and simply typed the Name (Step 1) into the Title field.
Yann has a fantastic idea of a fully integrate portable power pack for v1.0... but definitely needs professional technical assistanceIdea is essentially a removable "suitcase" that includes these electronics.  This can be easily removed and transported inside for recharging.    This helps so the challenges of infrastructure for charging electric vehicles.  He's envisioning a magnetic connection for easy portability.    At v1.0 then hopefully move into the Kit form... also at this point he has excellent plans for crowd funding, somewhat along the line of TrueFans... and avoid needing Kickstarter or Indigogo.

In an App called Voice Memos if recorded the Step Info and emailed the files (I emailed one to you)The files are automatically named with the time.
-- Planning with ChrisAdded second San Diego trip to his visit to see Frank Golbeck.

Then I transferred all the info and photos to Dozuki.
-- Revised answers from Jeff Moe:

• I'd like to get a handle on the capabilities of the KIT, as compared to the new TAZ 3. You had mentioned it doesn't have the digital display. Does it have untethered printing? Does it compare to he earlier TAZ, such as the version reviewed in the Make Magazine 3D Printer edition (attached)

Simple and really organized... and hopefully fail safe.
The kit at this point doesn't fully exist, outside of the BOM and we've ordered parts for maybe 200 kits or so. We left out what we thought would save significant money, that wasn't necessary to have a good printer. This was why the GLCD was left out. It can also be added separately. Or, we could just include it in the kit, if you think it should really be in there. The kit is a new deal for us, so feedback welcome. Let us know what you want to see and we'll do what we can to make it happen.

Toured possible dedicated area at CVS for Microcar event
• Can the “missing” elements be added to the Kit if the customer wants the upgrade?

http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/File:CVS_space.JPG
This would be the goal. It is difficult to maintain full stock of all the parts though. It is all fully open though, as you've seen, so parts can be sourced from other vendors as well. Plus, since it is open, alternative parts can be easily used.

Thursday, October 31, 2013
• In my notes, I had the Kit price as $638. Is that correct? If the upgrades are possible, how much would that add?

Rob - can you break up all the microhouse pix into MODULE TAGS (about 10 relevant ones of them) by Bulk Edit? Then I can link to them from the Development Boards.
I don't have a final bom cost. But that is probably in the ball park. The kit will be under $1k even with bells/whistles added, I'm pretty sure. Note, we also need to include things like boxing & bagging, etc. and we do really good packaging, but it costs…
Yes, I created a bunch of new ones yesterday by making stills from the video.  I'm going through all of it Friday and will tag.

Put together a "beauty" timelapse of the Microhouse that can be used as a background  for "sales" or other messages... or just for fun
• Is end of March still look like a likely timeframe for the Kits to be ready?

<html><iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/WTqyPYcqNy4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></html>>
Yes. We should be able to hit that. But you have to let us know what kind of volume you are talking here.

Working on tweaking of Microhouse Host text.

Wednesday, October 30, 2013
Probably not me, though it would be nice. Where/when would the workshop take place (date/address)? We may be able to do something. Do you have equipment etc to make it into good videos?

Webinar test with ESW. Video runs poorly and so does prezi.  Probably should convert to Powerpoint for this webinar.
• It looks like we may be getting a lot of interest from college architecture programs. Are there any special “selling points” you see for that audience?

Long meeting today with Ray Claridge, the founder of Cinema Vehicle Services.   He's on board to let us use his incredible facility for the build.
The TAZ can print big in materials like Laybrick. That's nice for architects. I can see why they are interested--making models of all sizes is awesome. I printed a teeny to giant and every step in between of the Vanderbilt Mansion, they look really cool. You can paint ABS easily with acrylics and whatnot, drill it, work it, etc. Plus lots of materials are available, even wood. Magic machine wooooo

Everything we'd ever need from mechanical, to body, to upholstery, and beyond.   They can fabricate the body and provide an wide array of experts.  Great story of these crusty old pros interacting with Yann and Marcin.
• MOST IMPORTANT. We want to be sure we design this so it's advantageous to you. Please think about how our Workshop programs can best benefit you.

http://cinemavehicles.com/services.asp
By making clear documentation, including videos would be ideal. Something that you can really watch on the Internet, not just youtube shots. More like a structured program, and less like a howto. Then finding out wtf people are doing with their machines that is cool/interesting and we can help promote that, particularly if they are free/open system folks. Just grow the ecosystem.

Thinking we can build there and then drive the car to the Museum for a final unveiling event and perhaps the historic car stays there for awhile.
We don't have any projection yet, but we're having some meeting now that may give us more info.

Next stop, meeting at the Petersen Museum. --- Need to determine how best to use CVS and the Museum so everyone  benefits.  Seems the Museum really gets us help with sponsors and supports the educational mission.
Ok.

I think that's it, until I think of a bunch more…

Completed the first video in a new series I'm calling the OSE Realtime Build Series.  These are "raw" videos that let viewers experience a GVCS Build as it happens.
Good response to my questions from Jeff Moe:

It's basically a cutdown of our raw videotapes, uploaded to the Latakoo public site.   The videos are full resolution so they can be used to edit other videos later.
• I'd like to get a handle on the capabilities of the KIT, as compared to the new TAZ 3. You had mentioned it doesn't have the digital display. Does it have untethered printing? Does it compare to he earlier TAZ, such as the version reviewed in the Make Magazine 3D Printer edition (attached)

https://opensourceecology.latakoo.com/v/?176263  (let me know of the link works)
It is basically the same thing, except we excluded the GLCD panel. That can be added later, no problem. The panel also has the SDCard, so it would need to be connected to a computer to print. That said, we can change the kit to include the LCD too, if it is really needed. We just thought kit people would try to save as much as possible and that can add $100 or something.

I've made a "breakthrough" on Latakoo, working with their technical people and doing uploads on a Mac Mini computer instead of my usual old Mac.
• Can the “missing” elements be added to the Kit if the customer wants the upgrade?

A file that previously took 6 hours to upload has been reduced to 1.5 hours.  That's what I hoped for in the beginning.
Yes.

This Realtime video is a cutdown of a 1 hour tape, edited down to 40 minutes. It took 1.5 hours to edit, 1 hour to output, then 1:10 to upload.  All good numbers.  --- This specific tape is an excellent model of how we should be shooting the builds, if we have work instructions ready.  The audio annotation along the way creates a good "how-to"
• In my notes, I had the Kit price as $638. Is that correct? If the upgrades are possible, how much would that add?

Mac Mini - version used for this upload
That sounds ballpark about right. We'll see if we can do better.

2011 Model - 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 - 2GB Memory
• Is end of March still look like a likely timeframe for the Kits to be ready?

New versions that I recommend OSE purchases as follows:
Yes.

http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/mac-mini
• Big Question – It would be fantastic to come learn it, but for the first Workshops we would love to have a Lulzbot person be there as an expert instructor. That sounds interesting, but we probably won't have the manpower to go send you someone. You are more than welcome to come visit here.

Frustrating day of re-importing footage to editing and reconstruction Project file.  Around 10pm back running.

Sunday, August 18, 2013
Researching wiki search engines.  John Stager a big help...he added a test Google search to his Log. -- Discovered that Elifarley has already added a good Google search function as "Custom Search" on wiki.  I didn't realize that was there!  It would be great if it could have sorting by Date, like John's version has.

HORRIBLE CRASH OF MY EDITING PROGRAM.

Saturday, August 17, 2013
Excellent conversation with Josh Hancock about possible sponsorships for OS car build event.  Will meet with him in person on Tuesday at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.

Continued Planning session with Team

Researching other OS cars.  Watched interesting video with Jay Rogers on "Jay Leno's Gararge" web series.  Discovered that if the purchasers helps on the build it's much easier to register with Dept. Motor Vehicles - falls under "kit car" rules.

GOALS FOR WEEK

LAST WEEK

Make revisions and post 6in60 video Part 1 - DONE, NOW WITH MARCIN'S VOICE - NEED TO REVISE MUSIC

Complete 6in60 video Part 2 (including OSBG tractor) - NOT DONE ADDING MARCIN'S VOICE WITH REVISION

Work with Team to complete Planning - ONGOING

Expecting Motherboard edit from Emily James - review and provide her final paperwork - REVIEWED EDIT - LOOKS GOOD

BASICALLY THIS IS COMPLETION OF LAST WEEK'S GOAL WITH ADDITIONAL OF MOTHERBOARD

THIS WEEK

Complete 6in60 as one video with Marcin's voice

Complete planning with Team

Complete initial plan/proposal for OS Car Event/Build

Complete all paperwork for Motherboard (new TED document)

Tuesday, August 13, 2013
Completed new cut of 6in60 Part 1 with Marcin's voice.  Also trimmed overall

http://youtu.be/3CZ1Vkc0nHk

Marcin's notes relate to Music.  Will comb Open Source libraries for new selections

Gathering research on Workshops and Seminars to model our events/educational/build Workshops.

Number of days for our event a huge question.

GOALS

More talks with Chris about workshop technique, based on his recent experiences.

Monday, August 12, 2013
Tuesday January 7, 2014
Editing on 6in60.  Received Marcin's voiceovers.
Moving OHAI Kit documentation into Dozuki

Will insert and trim Part I.  Part 2 is extensive recut will take a few days.
Monday January 6, 2014
Further thinking on Open Source Car event
Develop two curriculum tracks for Workshops.

So maybe it's framed as OSE putting on an International Symposium on Open Source Cars with invited guests, Jann, Justice, Rogers as well as maybe a Detroit type etc etc.  It's also an OSE education and build session.
1. Kit Build

The event is the first in a series of OSE educational/build events. Others not as "big" as this, but this one introduces the concept.
2. Assumes access to 3D printer already3D Printing training... more focus on creating model and printing techniques.

Big event still the culmination of weeks of design work as we discussed. (maybe the idea is taking the best of open source work done so far and re-mixing it as the OSE car)
Friday January 3, 2014
Perhaps becoming more "educational" focused can help us raise money from sponsors...as well as a revenue model for builds.
Long talks with Chris regarding folding a 3D Printer Workshop into the Ball State week. May be a safer first Workshop.

Like the idea of doing it in Detroit.  Perhaps in a closed auto facility.
Thursday January 2, 2014
Working with Jean-Baptiste on ideas for unifying graphics for the videos... text presentation styles for ID of people etc.

Sent video to Vintage Harmonists for scoring discussion.

Put call out to our remote editors for help.

Wednesday, August 7, 2013
Received next cut of Motherboard video from Emily James.  Looks good.  Planned for release next week.

Part 2 of 6in60 video coming together... focus will be on "victories" won amidst the difficulties of the time and lack of materials.

Outlining the focus:

The Ironworker prototype went together in about 12 hours.

The Backhoe's Pivot, Stick, Boom and Bucket all went together well.

We made some good headway with the Tread for the Microtractor

We decided to delay the car so we could do it in collaboration with other OS car projects.  (We're in negotiations now.)

Instead we jumped ahead and built a new version of our Lifetrac in collaboration with Our School at Blair Grocery, from New Orleans.  The project will be featured in a new documentary called The Spark. -- This new design shares several modules and design features with our Bulldozer and Truck.  This tractor also features a new diesel engine power cube.

Good day at Design Sprint.  Lots of technical progress on Torch Table, Hydrafabber and Welder.

Group helped input Dozuki placeholders for Marcin's list of modules for 26 of the GVCS.  Worked with Jean-Baptiste on adding icons for most of the machines.

Problem again with exceeding 10 person limit.  Began exploration of other option and collaborated with Katie.

Skype call with Andy Heyward from Motherboard.  He's editing Emily James' video piece and I've used Latakoo to get him material and he's successfully been able to view and download.

Posted the ROUGH CUT of Part I of the 6in60 story and will get feedback from the team to complete.  Music is temporary and script needs to filled out.  Also, want to get Marcin to narrate instead of me.

http://youtu.be/Ugh4F4OD_Nc

I'll share script via Google docs.

Sent the cut to Erik Miron, the musician, for scoring.

Goals:

Last week was devoted to planning with the Team and editing 6in60 material.  I didn't get as far as I wanted on the editing but it's moving ahead.  The good news is that the Latakoo site is successfully being used by Remote Editors and the Transciption feature on the site works really well.

This week I will post the first major story coming out the 6in60 and will move forward on the second part of that video, that transitions to the OSBG tractor build.  These will be honest accounts of the events, both good and bad.

Continue to prep and organize the Dozuki site with graphics and info.

Monday, July 29, 2013
Planning meetings with Team throughout the day.

More editing on 6in60...tedious.

Introduced Miguel into the graphics team.  Now working with Jean-Baptiste on info graphics.

Sunday, July 28, 2013
Editing all day on 6in60 story.  Slow going through the many hours of material.  Remote editor, Owen Smithyman, edited a one-minute sequence using my notes and suggestions on footage on the Latakoo site.  Latakoo worked perfectly after some troubleshooting.  Milton Dixon was ready to help too but ran into technical issues that he needs to iron out.  He'll be ready for the next round.

Saturday, July 27, 2013
Good Design Sprint.  Excellent sessions on True Fans, Permafacture Seminar planning and Development platform.  Seems most remote collaborators want a simple task oriented system without the confusion of the "big picture" issues.  ---  Seems to be attracted to simple task driven platforms like Mantis... although I think Project Manager can do it to.

Extremely interesting side Hangout with Fred Eisele and Robert Goeller regarding their software platforms.  Scott, the DPV coming Tuesday will be bringing copies of the software and we should have a Hangout with our team and them to see the excellent demo they showed me.  Very impressive simulations and more with our machines.  They are interested in working with rapid developers who can test their software and willing to publish results.

Tremendous connection at end of Sprint with Alexander Dale, Executive Director at Engineers for a Sustainable World.  Could be a fantastic resource.

Friday, July 25, 2013
Remote editing projects launched with Milton Dixon and Owen Smithyman.  Gave them script material and recommended visuals from Latakoo system.

After Planning meetings with entire team, focus of Dozuki documentation platform has changed.  Determined that the platform is not ideal for Development and we should concentrate on what it does best.

Dozuki will be a clear and attractive introduction to all 50 machines and their underlying Modules.

Also will include an obvious link  to a separate Development/Design Dashboard, which will be a spreadsheet based platform that can handle Gary's detailed Development flowchart and the many iterations of the machine along the way.

When Build Instructions are ready they will be included in Dozuki through the terrific guides the platform offers.

Jean-Baptiste's Infographic and Module sketches will be featured throughout the Dozuki platform creating a unified and professional presentation.

Best structure example with Infographic is CNC Torch/Router Table:
http://opensourceecology.dozuki.com/c/CNC_Circuit_Mill

Best Module sketches included with Backhoe
http://opensourceecology.dozuki.com/c/Backhoe

Also was decided to make Jean-Baptiste our Lead Graphics Designer and find a team he can lead to achieve the many graphics needed for this Dozuki platform.

Monday, July 22, 2013
After discussions with Team this morning, shifted gears on Dozuki plan and trying to add detailed development sections leading to a separate CURRENT BUILD INSTRUCTIONS section.

So all the Versions are separated and traced but the current "how to" is clearly indicated.  See the last machine in GVCS, "Z Test Machine", for working example.  http://opensourceecology.dozuki.com/

Also note Jean-Baptiste's graphic at the bottom of the CNC Torch page.  Very nice work.

Returning to video editing tonight.  Back to Dozuki in morning... want feedback before continuing forward.

Sunday, July 21, 2013
Editing on 6in60 Video.  Plan to make this a detailed informational video that tells a complete story.  Maybe in two parts.

Working on detailed Dozuki example for next design sprint.

Design Sprint all day Saturday.  Good discussion on Dozuki as well as Tibor's wiki interface.

Tested Latakoo with Steph in Germany and Milton Dixon.

Put first videos on Latakoo video site. Need to talk to latakoo about adding graphics and other branding.

Friday, July 19, 2013
Confirmed two new Video Editor remote collaborators and signed them up for Latakoo sharing.

Milton Dixon - this was his original note:

I'd be interested in contributing to your project. I've made a fair number of videos for Midwest Permaculture, mostly weaving improvised clips into a narrative or editing recorded webinars into a finished product.

I use Vegas Pro, can create basic animations, can overlay any graphics, and am able to work in HD.

You can see my work on YouTube, I edited everything except for the bioneers video.  http://www.youtube.com/user/MidwestPermaculture/videos

I could probably contribute a couple of hours a week.

Milton

Also Sean Maxwell  - he edits for ToolCrete in Oregon, the manufacturer of the stucco sprayer used by OSE for the stucco application on the HabLab:

I'd like to find out if there are any opportunities to contribute as an editor or assistant editor for the latakoo documentation efforts? I have experience working as an editor using Final Cut and am very interested in making any contributions I can.

Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you.

Sean

Setup the Public video sharing site through Latako

1. Secure TIG welder friend of Wayne.  - Alerted Wayne that the engine will arrive soon.  Discussed the plan for aluminum frame.  He will continue looking for a TIG welder but his neighbor is too old to help. - discussed with Marcin the idea of welding at the farm and Wayne assembling.  More design and coordination necessary here.

2. Get someone to design the new power cube - build upon Tom's Power Cube.

3. Build a Power Cube to fit the Wikispeed desing. Jordan is working on Modular Car Wheel Unit. From Joe - collate the DXFs and get Joe's approval. Between the SGT01 page and Dropbox - come up with shopping list. Ask Joe - are FastAce Coilover Struts the right thing for us? - Sent message to Joe but no response yet.  He may still be traveling back from Winnipeg.
Seems our first focus with Joe would be the chassis... and then determine the interface with our new front end/steering/suspension plan...will they work together?

4. Found VW expert Danny Brown in Kansas City.  Nice guy. Seems to be a good source for what we need and interested in what we're doing. We need: 1. Steering wheel. 2. Let's get brakes. 3. Let's get wheels and wheel brake pads. Goal: 1. Secure steering column, rack, wheels for front. Design rear wheels.  --- He recommended a 1971-1974 VW front end... simple system very similar to the Dune Buggy designs.  He located one for us this afternoon.  All the parts, including axle...which we don't need... runs about $1000... but he'll have more info tomorrow after he reviews the Wiki info.  -- He loved the look of the tractor etc. on our website.

Vic's Dune Buggies - (816) 650-3535 ‎- initial lead in KC appears to be out of business.

Spoke with Latakoo - long talk about our needs.  They have restructured a plan for us.  Need to discuss offline.

Worked on plan with Audrey for DPV video.  A very good idea she suggested.

Still experimenting with Smartsheet.

Tues Jun 11, 2013
Spoke with Wayne and alerted him about the new 660 PowerCube with the VW engine.  He's going to check out TIG welders, and his neighbor is a VW "nut" so he's going to gauge his interest in helping (he know welding too, but Wayne's not sure about TIG).  Neighbor is retired. Also - In my mind, this type of vehicle would be a great OSE Car... although probably wouldn't need all the "off-road" capability... but the basic idea is cool. . there definitely is a whole world of these "Side by Side" vehicles.

Mon Jun 10, 2013
Talk to Joe to get any CAM files and fabrication procedures.

Reviewed MANY Open Source project management software packages, like Open Project and ProjectLibre, as well as several commercial products like Microsoft Office...nothing seemed quite right.  Started testing in more detail with Smartsheet.  Went to share it with Marcin and discovered he once had a trial with it too.  Seems like it could be very useful... depending on pricing etc. -- but it feels like a valuable initial use for it (or another spreadsheet) could be to use the spreadsheet as a clear "table of contents" for what is on the Wiki...with links.  -- Seems like it can do a lot for us and be very user friendly and very clear, once I learn it.  Let's discuss asap.

Would be nice to have a visual interface like Dashboard, but may not be necessary if we all understand a standardized database tool.

Communicated with Winnespeed event and they are videotaping and shooting stills.  Requested a copy of the tape.

Made proposal to Latakoo.  No response yet.

Response from Joe Justice and website of "Winnispeed" event looks interesting.  https://blogs.rrc.ca/bit/event-registration/

Costs - not cheap.... But could also be a big jumpstart for car.

Spoke with Wayne Tollefson about the car and he certainly thinks he can do what's needed.  He also suggested using a Kawasaki motorcycle engine with a side shaft...  (816) 248-9485

Spoke with Ian about his build and the VW engine and it looks like they're going with the Kubota engine so their VW is available.  (they're not doing the chain drive.)

Got the contact for the Pasadena kids and a bit of an update on the farm and tractor ... not so good on either front... farm was forced out of town and tractor is not working... I'll get more info.

Planning and Review:

Week went well - Many tests with Latakoo.  All went well.  Worked towards completing an agreement with Wikispeed for car project.  Completed Popcorn Log video...good potential for other uses.  Worked on videos for Glimpses speech.

Traveled to Fallbrook, CA near San Diego and met Frank Golbeck and his friends. Great group and lots of interest in OSE.

Frank is a huge fan and we discovered he is also a friend of Scott Murray. Introduced us to the maker community in Fallbrook. Very exciting. See Chris' log.

Saturday Feb 1, 2014

Day Two of 3D Printer World Expo in Burbank, CA

First seminar dealt with Patent issues and IP. Interesting but not a concern for us right now.

Next What's Next in 3D Printing

Interesting info from Johann Rocholl and Terrance Tam from Open Beam - great innovations from Open Source companies

http://3dprinterplans.info/tag/johann-rocholl/

Delta Robot style - easier to manufacture/bigger build volume for footprint - Great workshop opportunity for the future.

referenced good site: http://open3dp.me.washington.edu/

Also discussed more on Resin printers

3D Printer Materials

Another great seminar by Lars and his associate Taylor. Another great element for our workshops

see Google Doc - 3D Printer Critical Path Document

3D Printer Troubleshooting

Lars again. Another great session and appropriate for our workshops. See google doc

Moved on to Resin troubleshooting. This is another possible workshop for us but they are more expensive right now and not as many OS options.

Crowdfunding

Astounding results with Kickstarter campaigns for 3D printers. i.e. Goal 31,000 Funding 1.2million -- Goal 49,000 Funding 650,000. However these successes have lead to great difficulty in delivery all the promised machines. Sourcing parts, manufacturing and especially shipping have turned into very challenging and expensive issues.

Also, support is hard as the focus is on manufacturing and the support infrastructure not ready.

Friday Jan 31, 2014

Day One of 3D Printer World Expo in Burbank, CA - Attended excellent seminars

Grant Writing for 3D Printer Funding

Debby Kurti or Windy Ridge Innovations and Joe Scott Afinia

Part of "Education Track" - Discussion of case studies where organizations (schools) have enlisted the financial support of boards, foundations, volunteers, agencies and 3D printer manufacturers to acquire their equipment.

Key points:

Sell the Story - Why should they care about your request.

Match Story to Funder's Objectives - i.e. Further STEM Education, Serving At Risk Youth

Tell story like it's already happening - "With a 3D Printer can can reach 60 students a day and speed them on their journey to compete in the world's economy."

Crowdfunding - DonorsChoose.org good for teachers

New sources for schools to buy printer - Parents split cost/Odyssey of the Mind/Booster Club (print items for resale)/Split use with Tech Ed Class/Run Prototypes for Small Manufacturers/Afterschool programs/Ask local businesses

Write Grant as if you have already been funded

Bring tangible items and examples to funding meetings

Intro to 3D Printer Hardware

Brook Drumm - Printbot - Open Source - Kits and Assemble. Their Simple model kit just $299

- FDM - Standard filament style - lays down layer upon layer - think "Hot Glue Gun on the end of a Precisely Controlled Robot Arm"

- Resin Printer (SLA) - UV light cures layer of resin. Laser style and DLP style. DLP cures entire layer at once but more expensive. Laser uses Blue-Ray lasers so common and less expensive.

More precise than FDM but messy and expensive ($2-3K).

- SLS - just out of patent. coming soon. SLS involves the use of a high power laser (for example, a carbon dioxide laser) to fuse small particles of plastic, metal (direct metal laser sintering), ceramic, or glass powders into a 3D model.

Intro to Open Source 3D Printer Software

Software for key functions:

Convert 3D Model file into STL (OBJ becoming popular - includes color info) Layout and Positioning in Printer Setting and Slicing - Creating G-Code or Toolpath file Host - sends info to printer

Popular software: SkeinForge - excellent software but complex - "more for Techies" Slic3R - Popular - window/mac/linux - not a Host (AMF - combos files for Dual Extruder model printers) Pronterface - Host software

MOST POPULAR - Repetiere Host - comes with Slic3r inside

Cura very good too

OctoPrint for Raspberry Pi

**Lars Brubaker from MatterHackers spoke - EXCELLENT

Their MATTER CONTROL software went open source this week

It's software that makes printing as easy as the closed source printers.

Uses Slic3R, Cura, and own based on Skeinforge.

Features automatic leveling and auto calibration. Advanced plating.

Spoke to Lars about teaching our seminars. He's interested. Meeting with him on Friday.

https://www.matterhackers.com/

Last seminar of day featured Fuel 3D's scanner. $1500 machine. Looked good. Adds accurate color in geometry. Easy to use.

Thursday Jan 30, 2014

Chris, Emily and I had excellent meetings yesterday in San Diego with Scott Murray and Jerry Miller.

First stop - Meeting in morning with Scott Murray at his farm

Very impressive organic farm using innovative techniques – good model for urban farm. -- AGRO-ECOLOGY WITH INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY is the focus

Farm to table “orders” from restaurants - he's growing crops based on the needs of specific restaurants.

He needs buildings – packing building, office, living space and a house with a view.

Pre-existing foundation possible for a building - was once for a double wide trailer

    • For dealing with the strict California codes we need to look at creating tiny houses built on wheels – Tumbleweed style

http://www.tumbleweedhouses.com/

(They also offer workshops... good looking page http://www.tumbleweedhouses.com/products/albuquerque/)

Need to look at using steel tubes for structure instead of bricks

He also needs machines to work on sloped terrain... tractor/bulldozer with wheels that change orientation while implements stay level

He's doing interesting experiments with cold tolerant plants etc. for all season farming

Great crops now that were planted in October.

Grafting big...instead of GMO – Turkish techniques

QR codes for rows for plants – App gathers info

OSE opportunity for innovative buildings... and tools that can be used in this setting … mod tools... advice on farming techniques from Scott

Next stop - Science Learning center site - Encinitas, CA

Met with Scott and Jerry Miller here.

Site far more developed than last visit. $2 million dollars of development and state approval the school now in place.

Focus is on STEM learning -- Inspiring minds of all ages. (NOTE: For every farmer who is 25 years old, there a five who are 75 years old!)

Wide driveway and cul de sac traffic circle where a water tower/aviary will be built

4 classrooms with decks in between – decks good for outdoor tables. - Temporary style buildings but fine for all our needs.

Good power and IT in place

Nice bathroom facility adjoining.

Science Learning Center could be excellent location for our first 3D Printer Workshop. Also, we may be able to dovetail the workshop with speaking engagements for Marcin at the surrounding Universities.

Surrounded by 10 acres of land for urban farming and greenhouses. Plans include a farm store and other amenities.

We discussed future ideas for possible OSE Workshop/Education Center on the site...more to come on that. Scott has grant writers who can help put this together.

Website discussions

We also had great discussions about the new website based on what we discovered. Definitely want to focus on BUILD YOURSELF for the Workshops and Machines and TRUE FREEDOM ONE DAY for more of the underlying philosophy and vision.

Wednesday Jan 29, 2014

Chris Arrived. Great discussions on everything from details of workshops to larger philosophy questions. Some important discussion points (in no particular order):

Nature and "promise" of experimental workshops Necessary infrastructure and tools for workshops. Positioning to the world of workshops - open source etc. DPV's in the new model San Diego connectivity for workshops and builds

Driving with Emily Aiken to San Diego this morning for meetings with Scott and Jerry.

Tuesday Jan 28, 2014

Further San Diego planning. Communication with Jerry Miller, Scott Murray's partner: Hi all, I am Scott’s partner in the Encinitas EAT center. Jerry Miller

Monday Jan 27, 2014

Planning San Diego trip for Thursday. Communication with Scott Murray. Discuss to include workshop opportunities. Hello Robert: I look forward to meeting Chris. I will invite my partner Jerry Miller to join us if he is available. I would suggest that we start at 10:30 at our farm. Then we will move 7 miles to lunch at Ciao which has a fine Italian buffet. Then we can drive to the Encinitas site and tour our school site.

This way you can take the 210 east to the 15 south and exit to the farm 1.2 miles west on Gopher Canyon... at 1319 Tarek Terrace, Vista Ca.

There is a suggested agenda for the day, Let me know what you think? Scott

-- Meeting with Yann re: Microcar:

Good meeting. Feels like there are still many technological hurdles. Goal is create the first function prototype... probably to be considered v0.5. Essentially a proof of concept. -- From there it can be quickly improved and hopefully be incorporated in the workshop model. -- Concerns are mechatronic safety, hydraulics/ front suspension and especially the power electronics.

Yann has a fantastic idea of a fully integrate portable power pack for v1.0... but definitely needs professional technical assistance. Idea is essentially a removable "suitcase" that includes these electronics.

-- Planning with Chris. Added second San Diego trip to his visit to see Frank Golbeck.

• Can the “missing” elements be added to the Kit if the customer wants the upgrade?

This would be the goal. It is difficult to maintain full stock of all the parts though. It is all fully open though, as you've seen, so parts can be sourced from other vendors as well. Plus, since it is open, alternative parts can be easily used.

• In my notes, I had the Kit price as $638. Is that correct? If the upgrades are possible, how much would that add?

I don't have a final bom cost. But that is probably in the ball park. The kit will be under $1k even with bells/whistles added, I'm pretty sure. Note, we also need to include things like boxing & bagging, etc. and we do really good packaging, but it costs…

• Is end of March still look like a likely timeframe for the Kits to be ready?

Yes. We should be able to hit that. But you have to let us know what kind of volume you are talking here.

Probably not me, though it would be nice. Where/when would the workshop take place (date/address)? We may be able to do something. Do you have equipment etc to make it into good videos?

• It looks like we may be getting a lot of interest from college architecture programs. Are there any special “selling points” you see for that audience?

The TAZ can print big in materials like Laybrick. That's nice for architects. I can see why they are interested--making models of all sizes is awesome. I printed a teeny to giant and every step in between of the Vanderbilt Mansion, they look really cool. You can paint ABS easily with acrylics and whatnot, drill it, work it, etc. Plus lots of materials are available, even wood. Magic machine wooooo

• MOST IMPORTANT. We want to be sure we design this so it's advantageous to you. Please think about how our Workshop programs can best benefit you.

We don't have any projection yet, but we're having some meeting now that may give us more info.

Ok.

I think that's it, until I think of a bunch more…

Thanks so much and I'm happy to call you or others if that's easier for you than writing this out.

No problem. Sry it took so long to get to it though. Feel free to ask any other questions.

Good response to my questions from Jeff Moe:

• I'd like to get a handle on the capabilities of the KIT, as compared to the new TAZ 3. You had mentioned it doesn't have the digital display. Does it have untethered printing? Does it compare to he earlier TAZ, such as the version reviewed in the Make Magazine 3D Printer edition (attached)

• Can the “missing” elements be added to the Kit if the customer wants the upgrade?

Yes.

• In my notes, I had the Kit price as $638. Is that correct? If the upgrades are possible, how much would that add?

That sounds ballpark about right. We'll see if we can do better.

• Is end of March still look like a likely timeframe for the Kits to be ready?

Yes.

That sounds interesting, but we probably won't have the manpower to go send you someone. You are more than welcome to come visit here.

• It looks like we may be getting a lot of interest from college architecture programs. Are there any special “selling points” you see for that audience?

Scale. :) The material “laybrick” (which we sell) is a good architecture material.

More with Dan Benamy this morning on Wiki organization, especially "Get Involved" section. --- Also discussed A/B testing for what we put up on the site... very interesting.

Exciting phone meeting with Scott Murray and Emily Aiken about San Diego workshops. Scott's school campus in Encinitas is ready and approved by State (less than 2 hours south of LA...near 5 Freeway). His goal is to "inspire minds across all ages" -- Wants to combine Agro-Ecology with Innovation Technology. -- Has 4 classrooms, restrooms, plenty of land... not fancy... I'll be visiting on January 30. - Great access to students. Also discussed other OSE collaborations. More to come.

Meeting with Dan Benamy. Tested BOM Generator for Dozuki guides. Working very well! -- also discussed his ideas for Wiki cleanup and his templates he's created. Excellent work. --- Further meeting today.

Discussions with Chris about his meetings at Ball State. It looks like including 3D printing workshops for them would be viable. Architecture department very interested. - Discussed Chris coming to the 3D Printer Expo as well.

Continued workshop prep

Questions for Lulzbot (awaiting response from Jeff)

• I'd like to get a handle on the capabilities of the KIT, as compared to the new TAZ 3. You had mentioned it doesn't have the digital display. Does it have untethered printing? (I'd imagine it doesn't). Does it compare to the earlier TAZ, such as the version reviewed in the Make Magazine 3D Printer edition

• Can the "missing" elements be added to the Kit if the customer wants the upgrade?

• In my notes, I had the Kit price as $638. Is that correct? If the upgrades are possible, how much would that add?

• Does end of March still look like a likely timeframe for the Kits to be ready?

• Big Question - It would be fantastic to come learn it, but for the first Workshops we would love to have a Lulzbot person be there as an expert instructor. Would it be possible to hire you, or one of your associates to join us? We're envisioning about 2 1/2 days for the workshops. We'd like to have the attendees build and then be able to troubleshoot the printer. We'll also include material on modeling, print software etc. -- We hope to customize the workshops based on where we are going.

• It looks like we may be getting a lot of interest from college architecture programs. Are there any special "selling points" you see for that audience?

• MOST IMPORTANT. We want to be sure we design this so it's advantageous to you. Please think about how our Workshop programs can best benefit you.

Worked with Emily on some great "look and feel" ideas for OSE and Workshops.

From Emily:

Hi Rob…

Look at each of these links carefully. This guy and his partner should be crafting the OSE look and feel.

Rob - please post links to work product on your log, as I am not able to provide any substantive feedback. One comment on foldable kit: this has not been developed, we need to stick to proven models if our timeline for the first workshop is end of March. - Aloha:)

HI. Please review the Smartsheet and Google Doc I shared with you as they are my working documents that change throughout the day.
