Logging footage in detail using Latakoo Start of a searchable database. Keeping on eye towards visuals for Glimpses.

Recorded Glimpses speech and edited it on a timeline. Outputted to an MP3. Runs about 13 minutes. (not performed, just read)

Thur May 30, 2013

Skype call with Emily James in England regarding VICE project. Sounds good. She needs answers/commitment from us.

Skype call with Tom Griffing and James Slade about 660 car project. Excellent insights.

Working with Emily Aiken on Glimpses speech. Building the entire speech on an editing timeline and filling in the needed visuals according to the script.

Wed May 29, 2013

Spoke with Joe Justice briefly about 660 car project. Still enthusiastic but busy in Zurich. Hopefully free tomorrow or Friday the latest.

Communicating with Matt Maier about it as well. Reached out to Tom Griffing and James Slade, no response yet.

Spoke with Emily Aiken about Red Bull presentation and coordinating video etc.

Reached out to Tim at Dozuki to get that back in motion.

Booked a meeting for Saturday here in LA with Ian Midgley about Tractor build and Spark.

Completed first Rough Cut of Popcorn video. Lots of potential, but better with topic that takes more advantage of other enhancements like Images, Google maps, etc.

http://popcorn.webmadecontent.org/12ii

Recruited highly credentialed LA editor Bob Shontell to collaborate Latakoo test. He's very excited to test drive the system for us and load material into his AVID and Final Cut systems.

Tues May 28, 2013

Uploaded the complete set of Documentation Jam camera cards into Latakoo

Shortened LogVideo and began revision of Popcorn enhancement.

Researched Hydraulic motor connection to 660 wheels.

Planning and Review: Week went well - Reached goal of uploading and testing Latakoo. Log of Drobo in process. Haven't completed blog about Remote Collaboration. Publish Blog Post to recruit editors. Almost complete Popcorn video on Blogging Standards. New project jumped to top of list, OSE-Wikispeed 660 Car build. Marcin connected me to Suzanne Safranac, ex professional script writer, but haven't made contact.

Goals for Week: Secure arrangement with Joe Justice at Wikispeed. Find Hydraulic team for Powercube and drive for 660. Connect with Suzanne. Continue test with Latakoo and Publish Blog Post to get collaborators the help test new system. Edit a new video TBA.

Sat May 25, 2013

Excellent talk with Joe Justice about OSE-Wikispeed 660 build. He seems very enthusiastic about our plan.

Design Sprint very good. Began IRC Chat setup. Not clear cut process and will probably ask for some tips so I don't waste a lot of time struggling through it.

Latakoo testing moving ahead. Panasonic camera compatibility solved.

Fri May 24, 2013

Good organizational meeting with Marcin regarding OSE-Wikispeed possible collaboration for 6in60

Excellent meeting with Paul Adrian and Ben Werdmuller of Latakoo regarding OSEdit platform. (Details on Latakoo page.)

Many tests with Latakoo from different computers and video file formats.

Thu May 23, 2013

Wikispeed Negotiations beginning.

Reviewed all the Wikispeed material and developing brief incorporating build in 6in60 campaign. Challenging process for me. Complete in morning.

Spoke with Latakoo and explained my problems uploading. They made a mistake in creating our account and fixed. Began uploading. They monitored my uploads and contacted me... knew I was using an old Mac! Suggested an enhanced upload tweak. All good, but probably best on a faster machine. --- also don't think it's as compatible with Panasonic cameras... consequently some of our older footage. -- Meeting tomorrow with head of company and will discuss these issues. -- but overall positive.

Participated in meeting with Ian, Tom, James and Audrey regarding the Spark film Tractor build. Listened to good conversations about Powercube and hydraulics... related to Wikispeed issues some valuable beyond this meeting. -- Plan meeting with Ian here in LA to review his film plan.

Wednesday May 22, 2013

Setup Latakoo account for testing video collaboration. Setup meeting with head of company on Friday to discuss plans. Unable to upload tonight. Need to talk to their tech people tomorrow.

Talked with Marcin about spearheading wikispeed car build for 6in60.

Communicated with Noel Hammer. Young editor in Europe. He's ready to help. Told him to standby to help test collaboration. Also he's writing his senior thesis on Open Source Hardware and using OSE as important case study. May need some info for his paper.

Worked on Popcorn annotation to Log Video.

Mon May 20, 2013

Planning and Review: Week went well - tracked down Latakoo as platform that we are currently pursuing. . Spent most time discussing the online video editing platform - video library + collaboration. Goal is to begin using it this week. Log of Drobo. Begin uploading to Latakoo. Blog about Remote Collaboration. Publish Blog Post to recruit editors. Complete Popcorn video on Blogging Standards. Marcin connecting Rob to Suzanne Safranac, ex professional script writer.

Note: the Work Log video could go at a faster pace - maybe more like 1:30 instead of 2:11?

Sunday 5/19/2013

Log Video rewrite and production Work Log Script. Rough Cut below. I need to improve the visuals. Next step in Popcorn annotation. My ideas in the script... should be more of the "nuts and bolts", links and tips.

Good Design Sprint today. New collaborator Michael Jordan will be working here locally on design/3D print for Microtractor tracks that I will film. Marie Louka is working on Concept Design Wireframe that will be translated into a video -- See the black and blue graphic at http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/OSE-OSHW-Dev-Backhoe.

Started Video Wish List Only a tiny sample on page now. All departments welcome to add titles for their needs.

Converted Work Log Script to 3 Column for Popcorn annotation notes. Using screen capture to create the visuals now.

Contacted Brian Ulrich to join design sprint. Could be a great asset on many fronts. Interested. http://www.ulrichgraphicarts.com/

Friday 5/17/2013

Phone meeting with Jaisen Mathai of OpenPhoto - Excellent photo sharing site and moving to video. May not be what we need but he referred me to Ben Werdmuller at Latakoo . Had long phone meeting and demo with Ben. Latakoo is a very powerful system for sending full resolution video files on the web at high speed.

Latakoo tools could be our answer for creating a library system (their tool can log and search our videos) as well as create a platform for remote editing of high resolution files and collaboration. Nice interface for making notes on video and attaching additional files such as scripts or other information.

Marcin requested writing a Blog Post on Remote Video Editor recruiting. Explain Industry Standards for commercial video production, excite people about remote editing. Publishing Plan - Blog, Staff Me Up, Kdenlive community, OpenShot (Marcin supported their Kickstarter, Cinelerra, Kinoraw. See also [[1]] and Blender community for animation. See also Open Source Camera Project.

Created first draft of Work Log Script.

Adobe has recently launched the commercial solution to our video needs. Adobe Anywhere uses a streaming engine to allow the use of high resolution video for collaboration. Instantly integrates with their editing, logging and graphics software.

The video at the top of the page explains it well. I'll figure out how to demo it. Probably very powerful. [2]

Adobe Prelude is their video ingesting and logging program. Again, very powerful. Here's a link video that shows its functions.

Building Personal Log explainer now. Added Popcorn annotation - [4]. Figuring out how to share it. VERY PRIMITIVE right now and dealing with learning curve... but pretty interesting.

More info on Media DB (also will add to Collaborative Video Standards page. Demo delayed until tomorrow.

File:MediaDB flyer.pdf

Created my first wikiwords page - Video Collaborators - contains descriptions of collaborator positions.

Tuesday 5/15/2013

Spent a few hours working with Popcorn. Definitely a unique tool. Robust annotation of videos...with interactive links to web. Pretty cool but still need to create the videos.

Could be VERY valuable for How-to videos that provide further levels of documentation, nested within the videos. I'll have to try one. (Although it might be better to nest video within OManual). Different way of thinking for us and also for a user. Could be very cutting edge... might get us a lot of attention if we can make serious use of the tool. More to come.

Drobo analysis today. Lot's of edited material and storage of the raw camera cards. A variety of formats. I think we'll need to spend the time converting the camera clips to Quicktimes so can be logged and a readily used on most edit systems.

Still intrigued with the WeVideo. -- Have a demo scheduled tomorrow for the Reel Data logging system.

Spoke with Emily Aiken about Red Bull presentation and shared our 6 in 60 script.

Tuesday 5/14/2013

Interesting info regarding logging and storage of video and collaborative editing. Tracking the following leads:

Reel Data [5] They are very interesting because I discovered the company was founded by an old friend, Joe Lewis. He's going to supply more info and a setup a web demo. It does all the library and logging functions we need. Built on Servoy platform. Joe recommended we look at WeVideo (see below)

Pilotware [6]

Cat DV [7]

WeVideo collaborative editing. [8]

This is very interesting. It's a collaborative cloud-based editing system. Don't need editing software like Final Cut or Premiere or Kdenlive. It's all part of cloud based system. Upload videos into it. Allows for different versions of editing software, from the most basic to near professional level. Not a sophisticated editing tool but very easy to learn for basic videos. -- Spoke with Joe about possibility of some combo with Reel Data library software. Not open source but definitely worth exploring further.... I will.

Starting Video Collaborators page... descriptions of what we need. Will set this up as linked page:

Producer/Directors - These are people that organize and lead a shoot. Sometimes they may also do the filming, but usually they are directing the film crew and conducting the interviews. They would have a clear understanding of the story and goals of the shoot. These folks would be very valuable if there's a build happening elsewhere and we need to get it documented without flying our people to the location.

Cameramen/Women - This, of course, is a very important category. When we have an important event happening it's great to be able to document with more than cell phones. Usually camera people will have their own camera and the quality will be much better than anything we can capture on a phone. A good documentary cameraman usually can also act as a producer/director and be able to understand the story in front of them and get the right shots and ask questions.

Editors - This is the other key category for us. The goal would to be able to post our "raw" footage online and have these remote editors build videos for scripts that we write. They can work on their "home" systems and the entire process can take place remotely.

Graphics People - These people are important for creating explanatory graphics and titles for the productions. They usually are skilled in programs like Photoshop and After Effects... or the open source equivalents.

Writers - This is another good category to fill. We could create outlines for scripts and then pass them along to writers who could turn them into scripts for the Editors to run with. This is important as we want to scale up to many videos at once.

Music - this is not as important, but if we have composers that want to contribute music, we can always use it. There are sources we can mine, but having "custom" music would be nice.

Assistant Editors/Video Librarian - these are people who are willing to help us log and organize the raw materials we shoot (and have shot in the past). They will log the footage and help organize our database/video library. It's important that they know a lot about the project, so their logs can have the necessary detail to make the footage useful for the future. For this point, we will work with OpenPhoto media repository as a strategic collaboration.

For instance... To log a shot "Man at podium" doesn't help much for search and re-use... better would be "President Kennedy at podium in White House" --- etc. etc.

Also want to talk big picture of music styles and narration voice.

Friday 5/10/2013

Long talk with Emily James in England about her Vice project and longer documentary on Open Source world. Very interesting. Good person.

Spoke with founder of Scenios - tool designed for film and television collaborative production. Mainly interested in their video library tool. Uploaded a test video and need to analyze results and usefulness. They use FF Mpeg open source video transcoding in the tool. Need to determine pricing if it's a viable option.

Archive.org is a massive video project that has been going on for many years. I have to dig into this to see how they do it. It's pretty amazing.

Joined 6 in 60 Design Sprint in the evening.

Thursday 5/9/2013

Good talk today with Tim at Dozuki. Their Android phone documentation app will be available in Beta soon and hopefully ready for 6 in 60.

Very interested in Marcin's multi purpose laser diode machine. Watched some demos online and the size and power look very useful.

Making contact with the list of potential collaborators. Working out plans for projects they can jump into immediately.

I'll clean up the 6 in 60 video and keep revising as plans solidify.

Wednesday 5/8/2013

Moving ahead on setting up documentation system and collaborators. Received many interesting leads from Marcin on people and will begin contacting them tomorrow... and copy Audrey on my findings.

Researching server system to handle ingestion and distribution of footage for all editing purposes. Looking into systems like Scenios... production in the cloud. Certainly would aid in collaboration but not sure they are the answer for heavy footage load. Hoping they can lead me to an answer.

Will contact Tim at iFixit/Dozuki to move ahead with OManual and hopefully work with them to document the Rapid Prototyping system with Sketchup/3D Printer/Lasercutter/Scale Model/Production plan.

Sent my blog info and bio but need to add photo.

Monday 5/6/2013

"6 in 60" ROUGH CUT complete. Feels like it's going well but I definitely need feedback on script and improving the visuals.

Would also like to chat about motion graphics collaborators. Some cool graphics would help and that's not my forte.

It runs about 3:20 now... seems like a good length but hopefully it explains clearly what we're trying to do... it would sure be nice to see a scale model.

And need to talk about the ending.

Once we discuss it, hopefully won't take long to finesse and finalize.

default.jpg - Whoa!!!

Sunday 5/5/2013

Editing this weekend on "6 in 60" - Going well - I'll post my cut later.

Will access the Drobo tomorrow to collect more (better) footage.

Feel like I can "temp" everything in except the Scale Model section. Welcome ideas there.

Rob (I apologize for my Rob Log trespassing), could you shoot me an email? katie@opensourceecology.com Thanks! Katie Whitman

Wednesday 5/1/2013

Completed a very ROUGH first draft of the script for "6 in 60" - Added a subtitle, the OSE Independence Day Project... perhaps "independence" theme might work.

Here's the script... again, very rough and definitely needs input, notes and wordsmithing.

File:6 in 60 v1.odt

Rob, please paste into a Google Doc and share with me so it's easier to edit in realtime. -MJ

Will work on the left column visuals tomorrow.
