A direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC) produces energy by combining carbon and oxygen, which releases carbon dioxide as a by-product. Older work since the 1970s/80s had investigated the development of powdered coal in fuel cells. There are some types of fuel cell that use charcoal to make electricity. The process of making this charcoal is essentially the same as the one for making biochar. It creates a type of charcoal that is high-carbon, low-tar, low-volatiles.
