Joshua is working on open source bioreactors through a major project to turn waste plastic into protein. It will be done in OS bioreactors and use all OS processing equipment - expect a long list of weird OS equipment from us over the next 3 years. For now, for this, technically you can do the fermentation step in any kind of gas-liquid reactor, even simple stirred tank reactors. However, reactors with high gas utilization are recommended for increased efficiency e.g. in order of preference: bubble columns, airlift reactors and U-loop reactors. These may be available at lab scale or bench scale. In addition, there are small scale centrifuges and spray dryers that can be used for de-watering. Lots of work needed to get this ecosystem up to OSE standards - but the potential is there. | Joshua is working on open source bioreactors through a major project to turn waste plastic into protein.
