In the BOM-CAD-Build Instructions triumvirate (see Meta Design Guide, or Extreme_Enterprise_Role_Architecture#CAD_Role_Architecture and Collaborative Design Guide for insights on effective large-scale builds) - the BOM has an admissible parts list that facilitates easy builds.
In an effective development infrastructure - there is a clear process for using the CAD to create BOMs and Build Instructions as needed - in a Construction Set Approach manner. See Collaborative Design Guide for the CAD-BOM-Build triumvirate explanation. Essentially - a BOM-Quality CAD can be used produce just about all the documentation assets for a given product.
