Basics
- This page aims to go over the design and operation of a Shallow Well using the “Driven Point” (aka Sand Tip) method
- Will largely be a Semi-Mechanized system without a Dedicated Well Drilling Rig to keep costs down etc
- Also largely identical in form for use in Riverbank Filtration etc
BOM
Hand Auger
- An Amazon Listing For “Seymour - 21308 S500 Industrial Auger, Hardwood Replaceable Handle Type, 8 inch” ( ‘’’~142 USD as of This Edit’’’ ]
Drill Pipe
- Galvanized vs Stainless Steel?
- Also ideal size of Mesh Length vs (Sealed) Pipe Length etc
Backfill
- One comment mentioned Lava Rock
- Local Gravel or potentially even coarse Charcoal (albeit would probably want it Calcined / as close to Activated Carbon / Ultra-Pure Charcoal as you can get to avoid contamination etc
- Pre-washing out sediment may be worth it as well
- Grout / Concrete]] / Clay may be needed as well
- Inerted Wax may be an interesting option to pursue
- To what degree a proper cap is needed over just Topsoil for shallow wells is worth investing as well
Driving Equipment
- Post Hole Driver is the “quick and dirty” method
- An attachment for a SDS Drill or a Pile Driver would be a better option
- Also typically a Top Cap is used for this phase to avoid damage to the Drill Pipe/Threads etc
- Is welding of the seams, or Threadlocker etc best practice to avoid pipe separation?
Misc
- PPE
- Ladders + POTENTIALLy (Staked Down) Plywood Etc to allow for a stable work surface
- Some sort of Sawhorse or Table may be worthwhile for ergonomic work on the pipes
