From our experience so far:

  1. 2012 learnings on Prototypes Built indicate feasibility of weekly machine builds, such as the CEB press, under a single operator working full time
    1. End state of possibility is further optimization of design and digital production engineering to allow for kit production on the time scale of 40 hours per machine easy, and perhaps 10-20 per machine with torch table in house and full build guides avialable.
    2. Status: CEB Press v17.08 is highly refined, with some operating stabilization required. One idea to test is making the frame bolted only as far as a welding fiducial. Unless bolting is extremely precise, machine will shift under normal operation if only bolts are used. Some simplifications such as less structure in the arms may help - the core of the machine can thus be lighter without compromising performance - perhaps by adding space frame arms and legs to reduce mass by 30-50% without compromising performance.
    3. Week long build - indicates $5k net value added productivity per week, or $1/4M year earning by a skilled operator. That is perhaps the max of a solo operator with skill, performing all work in house by themselves. With further material and parts production (2nd operator), we can likely double this (material Recursion, 2x profitability)
    4. Such an example, and many others when many other products are added to this list - indicates reinvention of production in any country so that unhealthy dependence on centralized production, such as in China, is limited - by Digital Craftsman leapfrogging throughout the world.
