Gasoline Phase Seperation

From Open Source Ecology
Jump to: navigation, search

Basics

  • A Potential Issue that can occur with Gasoline that has Ethanol added
  • Such as:
  • When dry uo to a critical point the Ethanol and Gasoline are a homogeneous mixture
  • Once enough water is adsorbed however Phase Separation will occur
  • The Gasoline will float above one or two layers, an Ethanol-Water Solution, and potentially a pure water layer below that
  • This can cause much more major issue to upstream pumps and to engines compared to the more moderate risk of corrosion and seal wear that Ethanol Fuel Blends can cause

Prevention

  • When doing a Fuel Storage Tank Cleaning checking that as little water as reasonably possible remains once the cleaning is done
  • Sealed Containers to Prevent Water/Humidity Entering

Treatment

  • Look into claims of additives to prevent/fix this issue once it occurs, otherwise drain and refill is standard practice
